For whatever reason I just really wanted to make something that would pop almost. Like I just felt like majority of my previous drawings were kinda boring and flat, so I decided to just go nuts with this one to try and make something that would draw people in. So I hope you like it :D

Reliving the old BSD arcs by reading the manga gives me new perspectives on some stuff, one being Corruption. I knew that it has an extreme physical strain, but I don’t recall the anime showing all the blood bubbling and streaming from Chuuya’s mouth as he’s in that state

Chuuya kills Fyodor to protect Dazai during the prison escape from Meursault, triggering Fyodor's ability and in turn angering the God of Calamity.

So about Corruption…

Who all knows about Corruption anyway? Like Soukoku was well known for their feats but were their methods and trump card well known?

It’s just something I’ve been wondering while reading through BSD, considering how powerful Corruption is and how it tends to be used as a last resort, especially considering how well Dazai and Chuuya can handle threats without it, both separately and by teaming up. Plus, it doesn’t seem like something they’d want their enemies to be too aware of.

So Mori and the Executives of PM (both past ones and current ones) obviously know as he made that info about Chuuya’s past and the gov experiments Executive level exclusive. Hirotsu knows as implied in the Dead Apple Prologue when Chuuya alluded to it while going to get Dazai back. Clearly, he knew exactly what Chuuya might use to get Dazai back and defeat the enemy. But even if not an Executive, he has seniority and looked after SKK when they were teens.

But does anyone else know in the PM?

When talking about SKK, Akutagawa doesn’t mention it (focusing more on just what the two were capable of when they teamed up and their specialties) and while Chuuya’s power is well known and respected - after all he’s not considered both the strongest ability user and martial arts specialist for nothing - it’s unclear if the full extent of his powers is. Anyone who joined after Dazai left would probably have even less than a clue as Higuchi didn’t even know the extent of Dazai’s work in the PM at first.

Obviously, the government and the higher ups in the Special Abilities Division know as they created the singularity in the first place. Or maybe Ango learned by spying on the PM or if Dazai bragged about (in which case, Oda probably knew too). And then the Division would have known how Chuuya’s powers have developed since he escaped. Not all of the Division knows though as Tsujimura didn’t know the details of it until she saw it, though she was told it might kill him.

I would assume the Hunting Dogs probably know (and Tachihara through them) as it seems they were the successors to the Arahabaki project.

Steinbeck and potentially his allies in the New Guild might know because he actually witnessed it (and Dazai bragged about it) and got to live to tell the tale. I don’t know what he might do with that info though.

Fyodor knows because Ace sold out the PM and he gained the info from him. Though then again, he was also there for Dead Apple and seems to have been lurking in Yokohama for a while so he might have made some observations and guesses about it and Ace’s info simply confirmed it. But Fukuchi might have already known before - both due to his ties to the military and gov and due to being the leader of the Hinting Dogs. It’s unclear whether Sigma and the others in the DOA know the full extent of Chuuya’s ability but they know he’s strong.

And then, finally, there’s the ADA.

I think Fukuzawa (and Ranpo naturally) might know especially from when SKK reunited during the Guild Arc, but it’s unclear if the rest of them know. It’d depend on if Dazai told them or not. I’ve seen people’s opinions go both ways on this.

Sure, Dazai likes to show off his Chuuya knowledge but he only really told Steinbeck because he was there. Though Corruption was a potential danger in the Cannibalism Arc, so maybe he did?

He’s never given up any of the Mafia’s secrets from what we can tell (which is part of what gives him leverage over them) and Chuuya especially is important to him so I don’t see him revealing more than he has to.

So overall, while there are several groups and people who might know about Corruption, it doesn’t seem to be too well known, with usually the higher-up levels of each organization being the ones most likely aware of its existence and uses. At least from what I can tell.

Chuuya Nakahara and Corruption

(*DISCLAIMER: THIS POST IS OLD AS HELL AND ALSO WRONG IN SO MANY WAYS, PLEASE IF YOU READ IT TAKE ALL OF IT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT, I’VE LEARNED THE INCORRECTNESS OF MY WAYS AND WILL BE REDOING THIS IN THE FUTURE. I WILL LINK THE BETTER ONE ONCE I’M DONE WITH IT*)

Yikes, here we go again.

I’m not gonna lie; Chuuya Nakahara was the reason I started watching Bungou Stray Dogs. @fairytailwzard told me about him and how we were similar: short, angry, sarcastic, argumentative, and last but not least, our love of hats (I mean Ranpo’s now my favorite, but that’s not important right now). But the thing that I found most interesting about him was his ability, “For the Tainted Sorrow”—a.k.a. gravity manipulation.

Now, I’ve seen the ability to manipulate gravity in many places, Dante Zogratis in Black Clover, Kargalgan/Tusk in Solo Leveling, and Ochaco Uraraka in Boku no Hero Academia, to name a few. But, as overpowered as these characters usually are, gravity is the weakest force in nature (below, strong and weak nuclear force, and electromagnetism); it’s 10^40 times weaker than the force that holds atoms together. To put that in perspective, that’s 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times weaker. Now that’s a lot of zeros (41, to be exact).

My question then, is why are all these characters so overpowered? A lot of the time, they easily crush their opponents (no pun intended). However, even when they don’t, they’re still considered some of the strongest and most dangerous there are (except for maybe Uraraka, but whatever. Maybe because she can only do Zero Gravity?). My only theory as to why this could be is the fact that we’re constantly surrounded by gravity. It makes the Earth orbit the sun, the moon orbits the Earth, and it keeps us grounded, so we don’t float away every time we jump.

Gravity can also kill us. Too little of it, and—and as I said earlier—we float into space and suffocate. Too much, and it would crush us. So, even though gravity is the weakest, the fact that it’s all around us makes it’s strong enough to make the ones who control it more powerful than anyone else.

Now, “For the Tainted Sorrow” (or Upon the Tainted Sorrow? I’ve heard both…) is the regular version of Chuuya’s ability. It allows him to (and I’m taking this straight from the Wiki again because I’m too lazy to find the description in the anime/manga) “​​manipulate the gravity of any object or individual he gets in contact with… he can change the direction and force of gravity from its standard… as long as the matter is touched somewhere with his body.”

Corruption is a more powerful and extremely dangerous version. It allows Chuuya to create and manipulate gravitons. Now I don’t know if y’all know this, but no one’s found the existence of gravitons… they’re just a theory—A GAME THEO—but a fascinating one at that (if we’re going by the general term, gravitons are a theory. But, because there isn’t a way to prove this theory wrong—only right—it’s not technically scientific). The other forces of nature that I mentioned before all have particles associated with them—quarks, bosons, and photons—but no one has found one for gravity yet (but scientists are pretty sure they exist). The Wiki also says he can manipulate his density. Which doesn’t make a lot of sense to me because density and gravity are different. I dunno if this is actually a thing or if they just made a typo or something?

Corruption comes from a god of destruction and calamity, Arahabaki. Chuuya has no control of his ability or himself when he uses Corruption. As a result, he goes absolutely bat-crap-crazy. But once we see what it’s like for him to use this ability, we gain a bit of understanding as to why he acts the way he does.

“The skin of his whole body twisted and tore apart, his eyeballs were ruptured, an anguish as if his internal organs were being crushed. A violent pain accompanying the manifestation of a beast which was not from this earth. But he was not able to even let out a single scream.”

This quote is from one of the light novels (which I have yet to have the privilege to read), and honestly, it sounds really disturbing. So as much as Chuuya looks like he’s enjoying it in the above GIF, I don’t think it would feel very nice.

This happens every time Chuuya uses Corruption (we’ve only seen him use it twice in the anime: once while fighting Lovecraft and the other during Dead Apple). After the fight with Lovecraft (one of my all-time favorite battles, by the way), Dazai lets Chuuya run wild with Corruption for a while before canceling it with his ability. Finally, Chuuya—understandably upset—says to him, “I told you to stop me as soon as it was over.”

Dazai replies, “I was going to, but it was entertaining, so I had to watch.”

To which Chuuya says,

Now, I don’t know if Dazai is aware of the pain that Chuuya goes through each time he uses Corruption. But, even if he doesn’t know, he’s gotta know that it’s not comfortable or nice to Chuuya, considering the only reason Chuuya doesn’t die is because Dazai cancels it. And yet, he doesn’t care. And I know everyone loves Dazai, but he really is a terrible person (but this isn’t about Dazai, so I’m just going to ignore him for now.)

Anyway, poor Chuyya. As cool as Corruption is, I don’t want him to be in that much pain whenever he has to cause mass destruction and murder a bunch of people.

Questions and other thoughts:

How powerful can he get? Can he crush the earth (I mean, I don’t see why he would, but the question is, CAN he)? Or make the whole thing have zero gravity? Is he limited to a specific area?

Can he manipulate things that are connected to the things he’s touching? Is that what happened with the rifles and lasers? Or are those considered part of the same object?

Can he control the gravity of certain parts of his body? Say his head? Is that how he can walk on ceilings? I have no idea how he’s able to walk on walls. How does he keep his hat on? Does he make it heavier than it should be?

On another note: NASA says, “there is no science that says that gravity control is impossible.” I read the rest of the article, and it basically says that we can control another force (electromagnetism) quite well. And since the two forces are linked, as far as we can tell, one thing might lead to another, and we could end up controlling gravity (probably not as well as Chuuya, but you know, that’s ok.)
