the goldfinch was a very... flat film imo. i’m definitely curious to read the book because i feel like it has as lot of potential but i get the vibe it’s still gonna be a lot of patting itself on the back for wanting to analyze and care about historical media (art, music, literature) rather than like..... character depth.

the anachronistic detailing of he sort of refined yet retro 80 feelings when dealing with people of wealth vs the 2000s vibes of his time with his father was interesting. i got it. it was confusing in terms of what it added but i got it. nostalgia, timelessness of art, blah blah

but it’s timelessness also felt lost in time... meandering....... without time as opposed to timeless. i can see why critics didn’t love it, it didn’t make me feel anything besides baited by ‘you don’t understand what it means to love the wrong person.’

idk it just felt very self involved without defining ‘the self’ besides ‘infatuation with old shit and academia.’ as a burnt out english degree holder who loves media analysis and fucking hates “the canon” i just felt.... like... sure.......... that sure is some art. there wasn’t enough character or depth to buoy anything.

i have decided to submit an art portfolio with my college application. that is due in a little over a month. a portfolio that doesnt really exist yet. fuck
