another one of those hartwells. born with a silver spoon her mouth that got taken away — along with her father, her family’s fortune, and their company — at the tender age of thirteen years old. her father, william hartwell, began siphoning off millions from the family company to a) continue the spending habits of his family and/or b) keep his mistress content in her affluence. even after he was caught and promised to return the money, he left with said money and said mistress, letting the fallout hang over the rest of the hartwell family. gone was the wealth that she’d grown accustomed to; gone was the father she’d thought she’d loved; and gone was the close knit relationship she’d always had with the rest of her family, who ostracized kit, her siblings, and their mother immediately following william’s departure and their ruination. in the blink of the eye, her whole world had completely turned upside down, so she can hardly be blamed for not recognizing it. queue fallen princess trope? you betcha.
she’s the kind of girl who believes in authenticity, but spent years lying with every single smile she plastered onto her face in the wake of everything that happened. with everything else falling apart, kit knew that she couldn’t. not when she had younger siblings to encourage. not when robin, who she’d always looked up to, had been the last person to see her father before he’d left. she was almost desperate to not be another problem heaped onto the pile. so she faked the smiles and the encouragements and the optimism as they moved into a new, downsized home and as the debt that their father had thrust them into continued to hang over their heads. sometimes, she thought if she said it’ll all be okay enough, even she might actually believe it. spoiler alert? she never did.
even school wasn’t a release from that anger and frustration that continued to build. while her family’s reputation had been tarnished, so had kit’s, leaving her with eyes trailing her back and whispers rising around every corner. she met each curious glance or barely concealed antagonistic question with another grin, another response hemmed down to nothing short of politeness — it’s what she’s always been best at. her can-do attitude, flurry of extracurriculars, and general likability allowed her to fall into the “popular” crowd in senior high — with an added bonus of being known as a good time with a tendency to overdrink [think season one marissa cooper tbh]. probably has more of a collection of forgotten nights than she’d like to admit, but that stress had to be released somehow, right? and, watching her smile the day afterwards with a slight, hungover wince, you’d never know it bothered her.
attended the university of british columbia on scholarship [at least those grades and extracurriculars earned her something] and probably earned a degree she didn’t really care about, but was good at and knew would make her a fair bit of money. dreams are for kids who don’t know any better and she lost hers at thirteen. currently, she’s a marketing assistant for a health app start up [thank you analese, my savior!!!] and, while she’s not “living the dream,” she’s having a good time.
personality-wise, she’s an earnest people pleaser almost desperate to be liked and, while she’s generally found to be likable, she’s not necessarily knowable. she keeps so much buried that she almost forgets where she puts it, pasting on a smile while most definitely coming undone. perhaps my self-worth is made up of how other people see me fits kit perfectly, honestly. she’s insecure, sweet, an ingenue who actually does know better, but makes the wrong choice, anyways.
