Bucaneve - Temporary Score:
Description: "snow flowers"
First Take Points: 3 - this is another of the 'specialty' shapes that i found when i was trying to hunt down all the other not-specialty-but-not-generally-found-in-your-regular-supermarket shapes. i was HIGHLY suspicious that this would end up being a pasta flower full of boiling pasta water (look at those little lobes!) BUT, shame on me for making assumptions, these lovely little snow flowers did NOT harbor any nasty boiling surprises. altho they did take a few extra shakes of the strainer, just because of their irregular shape, they were otherwise quite lovely. unlike the zuchette (which came from the same brand, so i feel this is a fair comparison), they didn't fall apart at all when boiled and jostled around. i was also concerned that the center-under-join would take ages longer to cook through, but these were just a perfect bite all around, no weird undercooked spots, no mushy bits. and as you might guess, they are wonderful grippers of a lovely Daily Red Sauce (seriously, after this year, i think my muscles are noodles and my blood is red sauce).
Remix Bonus Points: 3 - this would work equally well in a soup, a thin sauce, or a thicker sauce with more bits and bobs. it would also be very cute in a summer pasta salad (despite the name SNOW flower) with some fresh veggies cut in other adorable flower shapes. ah shit, i just added a to-do for myself in june, didn't i?
Amusement Points: 3 - i'm not entirely sure how to pronounce bucaneve (i vacillate between three different pronunciations, depending on my mood) but i enjoy the split second look of someone who thinks i am about to say "bucatini" and wants to mansplain pasta to me, and then is struck dumb by what i actually describe and is blissfully silent for nearly 3 whole minutes. plus, it's a very cute little flower!
Annoyance Deductions: -1 - i'm not really sure that poor bucaneve has earned this deduction, but it bothers me vaguely that viewing this pasta shape from the top, the bottom, and profile, give the impression of three wholly separate pasta shapes. i don't need my food to be an optical brain-teaser. ... on the other hand, maybe i do???
Alternative Uses: well, despite the "snow" part of their moniker, i can certainly see these as flowers in my pasta seascape- WAIT! ITTY BITTY FLOATY TUBES!! still for my pasta seascape, but MUCH MORE FUN than just flowers. pft. flowers. save me from drowning that then we'll talk. k, bye friends, i'm off to build a giant pasta bucaneve pool floaty (this might also serve me better in june, seeing as how i live in the frozen tundra right now- WAIT! BUCANEVE SNOW TUBE!!!)
