You’re both on the couch, legs tangled, half-watching some movie neither of you really care about.

Bucky’s hand is in your hair, mindlessly scratching your scalp, and your own phone is dead somewhere under the blanket. He passes you his when you mumble something about wanting to check movie reviews and scroll a bit.

You unlock it, swipe around, open his gallery by instinct.

And then you pause. Because his photo album is full of… you.

Like, really full of you.

Not just selfies or cute posed moments. No, it’s the sleepy ones. The mid-laugh ones. You holding a mug of tea. You reading. You crying during a Pixar movie. You with toothpaste on your cheek. You making a dumb face while holding a cat plushie from the arcade.

You blink “Buck?” you ask softly.

He hums from beside you, clearly seconds from dozing off.

You hold up the phone. “Why do you have, like… a million pictures of me?”

He cracks one eye open, sees what you’re looking at—and instead of scrambling for an excuse, he just shrugs “Helps when the world feels loud.”

You stare at him. The room suddenly feels warm and huge and soft and small, all at once.

He sits up slightly, watching your face.

“I didn’t mean to be creepy or anything,” he adds, voice low. “You just always look so… peaceful. Or real. Or happy. And I like remembering that. On the bad days.”

Your throat closes up. You blink again, swipe slowly through more of the images.

They span weeks, months. Seasons. Your hairstyles changed. Pajamas, hoodies, smiles. And always, you.

He touches your hand “I don’t always know how to say stuff,” he says. “But pictures help me remember. What I have. Why I’m okay.”

You bite your lip, fighting tears now “You’re really soft, you know that?”

His cheeks pink. “Only for you.”

You reach over and kiss him, slow and gentle.

The next morning, you catch him printing out a few of the photos and tucking them into a little notebook by the bed “Just in case I need them when my phone dies,” he mumbles, clearly embarrassed.

You flip through it each photo labeled in his neat, all-caps handwriting.

You stare. And then you tackle him with a hug so hard he almost drops the notebook "Buck?”

That night, you fall asleep with the notebook on your chest and his arm around your waist.

And in the middle of the night, when he wakes up from a nightmare, he just gently flips through the pictures until his breathing slows again.

You never even know.

It was instinct — soft, slow, just beneath his cheekbone. His scruff tickled your lips and you hummed into it.

“There,” you said, with a smile. “Now you can go.”

Bucky stood frozen, eyes half-lidded like he wasn’t entirely present. “Wait… that’s it?”

You laughed. “You’ve already had three kisses this morning.”

“I’m a supersoldier. I need more than three,” he mumbled, stepping forward and pressing his forehead to yours like a literal menace. “Kiss tax. It’s part of my morning routine now.”

So you gave him another one — firmer, a little higher this time, leaving a soft print of cherry-pink lipstick on the edge of his jaw.

“There. Now go, soldier,” you said, pushing gently at his chest.

Bucky smirked and finally relented, grabbing his jacket and keys.

“I’m still gonna text you in five minutes,” he called on the way out.

“I expect it,” you grinned.

You didn’t think much of it.

Just a little goodbye kiss. A smudge of lipstick, maybe — nothing major.

Until later that afternoon, Sam texted you a photo.

📸: Bucky, standing next to Sam at a small food truck table, sunglasses on, arms crossed, looking like the most intimidating man alive… except for the very visible lipstick stain on his cheek.

Sam: tell your man he’s got your kiss stamped on him like a threat 💀 You: wait. WAIT. did no one tell him?? Sam: we tried. he said “i know.” and then smirked like a smug bastard he’s INSANE

You were still cackling when Bucky walked in later, grocery bag in one hand, sunglasses pushed into his hair.

“Hey, babe.”

You pointed at him dramatically. “You left it on.”

He played innocent. “Left what on?”

“The lipstick!” you said, laughing. “Sam sent me photographic proof. You wore it the whole time!”

He shrugged, unfazed. “Yeah. So?”

You gawked. “Bucky! You had a full kiss print on your face.”

“Your point?”

“You didn’t even try to wipe it off!”

He walked over to you slowly, a lazy grin on his face. “Sweetheart,” he said, wrapping an arm around your waist, “you think I want to wipe off proof that someone like you loves me?”

Your heart did a very embarrassing flutter.

“I like it there,” he murmured, brushing his nose against yours. “Makes me feel claimed.”

“You are,” you said softly.

“Damn right,” he said, pulling you into a kiss.

Later that night, you caught him in the mirror, pretending to shave but carefully avoiding the exact spot your kiss had landed earlier.

“Don’t think I don’t see you sparing the lipstick zone,” you teased from the doorway.

He gave you a faux-scowl. “I’m preserving history.”

“History?”

He nodded solemnly. “Battle mark of affection. I earned it.”

You rolled your eyes and padded over, kissing his cheek again.

“Nope,” you said. “That one was just because you’re cute.”

Bucky turned to you, arms instantly sliding around your waist.

“And this one?” he asked, pressing his lips against yours.

You melted. “That one’s because you’re mine.”

He smiled.

“I was always yours.”

The kettle clicked off in the kitchen. You were curled on the couch, half-asleep, the soft hum of the evening settling around your shoulders like a warm blanket.

You didn’t mean to look up. You were just reaching for your tea.

But then you saw him.

Leaning against the doorway, arms crossed over his chest, shirt slightly wrinkled from lounging. Hair tousled. That soft little frown he always wears when he’s too focused. And he was looking at you.

Not like a glance.

Not like a fleeting look.

No, Bucky was watching you.

Head tilted slightly. Eyes soft. Like he was trying to memorize the way the light hit your cheekbones or the way your fingers curled around your mug.

You froze — not visibly, just internally — caught off-guard by how tender his gaze was. Like loving you wasn’t just something he did… it was something he studied.

You blinked down at your tea, heartbeat a little uneven.

But you couldn’t help it. You looked back up again.

And there he still was.

Looking at you like he’d walked through fire and found heaven on the other side. Like you were the peace he’d never believed he’d earn.

Like he’d wait lifetimes just to sit across a room from you again.

A few minutes later, when he wandered over to sit beside you, you didn’t say anything.

You just rested your head on his shoulder.

But he pulled you close — arm looping around your waist with a protective grip, like even in this safe little apartment, he didn’t trust the world not to steal you from him.

“You okay?” he asked softly, lips brushing your temple.

You smiled. “Yeah. Just thinking.”

“About what?”

You paused.

“About how you look at me when you think I’m not watching.”

His grip tightened.

“I wasn’t trying to be creepy,” he said quickly. “It’s just… you looked really peaceful. And I dunno, sometimes I just— I like watching you exist.”

You turned your head slowly, pressing a kiss to his jaw. “It wasn’t creepy. It was soft.”

He blushed. “You sure?”

You nodded. “It was the kind of look that makes someone feel really, really loved.”

Later that night, he thought you were asleep.

You weren’t.

You were curled under the blanket in his arms, your back to his chest, breathing slow and steady — and his hand resting over your heart like he was grounding himself.

And that’s when you felt it.

A gentle kiss pressed to the back of your shoulder. Then another. And another.

Then his voice, barely a whisper:

“I still don’t know how I got this lucky… but I swear I’ll never stop trying to deserve you.”

You didn’t say anything.

You wake up, stretch, and blink into the soft golden light pouring through your apartment window. It’s Saturday. No missions, no chaos, no alarms. Just quiet.

And for once, you actually slept.

You roll out of bed and shuffle to the bathroom, ready to splash your face with cold water. But the moment you look in the mirror— “What the hell?”

Your hair. Your usually straight hair. It’s curled. Not soft, wavy curls. No. These are curls. Springy, bouncy, absolutely not normal.

You frown and poke at them like they might bounce off your scalp if you’re aggressive enough. You haven’t used heat in days. There’s been no humidity. No new products. No pillowcase change. No logical explanation.

Except, of course…

“Oh my god,” you whisper, eyes wide. “No. No no no—”

The hair theory.

You remember hearing it from Nat a few weeks ago, when she was scrolling through TikTok with her feet on your coffee table.

“Apparently,” she said, “when you start falling in love, your hair literally changes. Like… more volume, shine, texture. Especially curls. Love makes your hair curl.”

You’d laughed. Loudly. Science doesn’t work that way, Romanoff.

But now?

Now you’re staring at your reflection, jaw slack, and your hair looks like it belongs in a commercial.

And you have a terrifying suspicion as to why.

Or rather… who.

Because Bucky Barnes moved in across the hall six months ago. And you swore it meant nothing.

Just an ex-assassin-turned-soft-heart who brought you bagels after bad missions, made you tea without asking, and sat on your couch like he belonged there.

Just a guy who looked at you like you were something steady in his whirlwind life.

Just your friend.

Right?

Wrong.

Because now your hair is curling and your brain is spiraling. You step back from the mirror, staring at your own reflection like it just exposed your deepest secret.

No. No, you’re just imagining things. Hair doesn’t magically curl because your heart decided to do gymnastics over your best friend’s stupid smile. It’s probably just… new conditioner.

Definitely not love.

Right????

You’re still battling with your hair (and your thoughts) when there’s a knock on the door. A familiar, gentle three-tap knock.

You freeze. Because of course it’s him.

You tug your hoodie over your head (ignoring the way your hair poofs out around your face) and open the door. And there he is. James Buchanan Barnes.

Sweatpants.

Messy hair.

Two coffees in his hands.

Sleepy eyes.

Stupidly pretty.

“Morning,” he says, offering you one cup. “You look like you just got struck by lightning. Cute lightning, though.”

Your face heats. “Thanks. I think.”

He walks past you like he lives here. Which, to be fair, he kind of does. His hoodie is draped over the back of your chair. His charger lives in your wall. He knows your Netflix password. You’ve stopped pretending there are real boundaries anymore.

You plop beside him on the couch, hair frizzing even more as you tuck your knees under yourself.

Bucky watches you sip your drink and frowns.

“Wait. Your hair.”

Your heart drops.

“I—it’s nothing.” He leans in closer. “It’s… curly. Like, way curlier than usual.” You hide behind your mug. “It’s the weather.” “It’s 67 and dry.”

“Okay, maybe it’s new shampoo.”

“You’ve been using the same brand since February.”

You glare. “Why do you know that?”

He shrugs, smug. “Because I notice things about you.”

Your heart does an Olympic somersault. He grins, completely unaware he’s causing your internal organs to combust.

You clear your throat and change the subject. “Anyway. Hair stuff. Not important.” But Bucky, being Bucky, doesn’t drop it.

“Y/N,” he says softly, nudging your knee with his. “You ever hear of that TikTok thing? That theory about your hair curling when you’re in love?”

You nearly choke. He laughs. “Steve told me about it last week. Apparently Sam’s girlfriend’s hair went all curly and now he’s convinced it’s real.” You stare at your knees. “Yeah, well… good for Sam.”

Bucky looks at you for a long moment. Like he’s waiting.

“…You think it’s real?”

You shrug. “I mean, not really. But…”

“But?”

You finally look at him.

“I don’t know. Maybe it’s not about the science. Maybe it’s just the way love makes you softer. Happier. Makes you take better care of yourself without realizing. So your hair changes. Your eyes glow. Your laugh’s louder.”

Bucky watches you. Then, voice low:

“Do you think that’s happening to you?” You freeze.

He doesn’t blink. Doesn’t smirk. Just asks.

You open your mouth—and close it again. Because it is. And it’s because of HIM.

The late night talks. The half-asleep cuddles. The way he holds your hand during scary movies like it’s second nature. The way he knows your favorite mug, your 3AM fears, your dreams.

You fell in love somewhere between the quiet and the chaos. And now your hair is curling like it’s announcing it to the damn world.

You swallow hard. “I… I don’t know.” He nods. Slowly. “Okay.” The moment stretches.

And then—

“Because,” Bucky says carefully, “mine’s doing the same.” You blink. “What?”

He ruffles his hair sheepishly. “I woke up and it was all wavy. Steve teased me for a full ten minutes. Said I looked like I walked out of a rom-com.”

Your eyes widen. “But… your hair only waves when—” He smiles, nervous. “When I’m happy. Yeah.”

Your throat goes dry.

“I didn’t want to assume,” he adds, “but if this theory means anything… I think we’ve both got some explaining to do.”

You stare at him.

He stares back.

And then you laugh.

Because this is ridiculous. And sweet. And painfully obvious. You whisper, “So… you’re saying your hair is in love with me?” He smirks. “I’m saying I’m in love with you.”

Oh.

Oh, that’s better. You whisper, “Me too.”

And before either of you can overthink it—

he leans in. And kisses you like he’s been waiting forever. Like the curls in your hair were just love letters in disguise. Like every soft strand said, I want you.

Like love was always growing, quietly, at the root.

Later, curled up in his lap while reruns play on mute, Bucky runs his fingers through your curls and smiles. “I like the theory,” he murmurs. You grin, sleepy. “You would.”

You nuzzle into his chest. “Guess it’s real, then.” He kisses the top of your head.

But somehow, it led him here…

Bucky never used to believe in fate.

Not after Hydra. Not after the Winter Soldier. Not after everything that taught him the world was chaos and survival was coincidence.

But then he met you Or—maybe he didn’t meet you. Maybe he always knew you.

Maybe it was a thousand little things pulling him toward you across years and cities and silence.

Like an invisible string.

Tied from his heart to yours.

It starts with something stupid.

You hand him a book in the common room one afternoon. He flips it open and finds his own name underlined on page 17.

“What the hell?” he asks.

You laugh. “That’s from years ago. Before I even knew you. I used to highlight characters with names I liked.”

His name. His.

He doesn’t say anything, but later, he folds the page corner down like a secret.

Then it’s music.

You hum exactly the same melody he used to whistle as a kid. One day, he stops you mid-hum and stares.

“What?” you laugh.

“Where’d you learn that song?”

You shrug “I don’t know. My grandma used to sing it to me.”

His grandma did too.

“Do you believe in fate?” you ask him once, lying with your head in his lap on the fire escape, city lights flickering below.

He shrugs. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t think it’s kind of crazy? That out of every coffee shop in Brooklyn, I picked the one you were hiding in that day?”

“You were loud,” he mutters.

“You were grumpy.”

“You ordered your coffee wrong and then said ‘oops’ like it was cute.”

You grin. “You remembered.”

He looks down at you. Soft. Barely breathing.

“Yeah,” he murmurs. “I remember everything about you.”

There are photos now.

Polaroids tucked into his wallet. One in his book. Another under his pillow, where he swears you’ll never find it. (You do. You smile. You don’t say anything.)

He gets clingier the more time passes.

Not possessive. Just grateful.

Like he can’t believe the universe handed him something good and is just waiting to take it back.

One night, he’s quiet. Too quiet.

You trace circles on the metal of his arm. “What’s going on in that head?”

He shakes his head. “Just thinking.”

“About?”

He hesitates. Then finally, softly “I think I’ve loved you forever. I just didn’t know your name yet.”

You stop breathing. And then you kiss him.

Not like a first kiss.

Like a memory.

Like coming home.

You both start collecting little threads.

Literal ones.

You find a gold string in a bookstore binding and tie it around your wrist. He notices. Doesn’t say anything—but you wake up the next morning and there’s a matching string on his.

“No one’s gonna believe how soft you are,” you tease.

“Good,” he says. “I’m not soft for anyone else.”

Sometimes he stares at you like you’re not real.

Not in a weird way. In a stars are real and so are you kind

One day you catch him whispering something to himself after you walk away from the kitchen.

“What was that?” you ask.

He clears his throat. Shrugs “I just… I think maybe the string showed up because I finally stopped running from where it was trying to take me.”

You blink. “You mean… me?”

He nods. His voice is barely a whisper.

“You.”
