Alumna sworn in as PA’s new state treasurer
HARRISBURG — The swearing in ceremony for Pennsylvania’s newly elected state treasurer, Stacy Garrity, was held on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at The Forum in Harrisburg.
Garrity, a 1986 graduate of Bloomsburg University, unseated incumbent treasurer Joe Torsella in the November 2020 general election.
During her inaugural address, Garrity acknowledged her family, friends, and volunteers for their support saying, “I offer a humble word of thanks.”
Garrity, who served 30-years in the Army Reserve receiving the Bronze Star twice for exceptional service and the Legion of Merit before retiring with the rank of colonel, also had a long career in private industry, added, “Government has a moral obligation to what is best for the people. The economy is here to serve people – not the other way around.”

She closed her address by urging everyone to look ahead. “If you focus on the rearview mirror, you’ll miss where you’re going. We need to look ahead to a place of optimism and cooperation.”
Performing at the swearing in ceremony was the Bloomsburg University choir under the direction of professor Alan Baker. The choir sang the “National Anthem”, “Hymn of America” and “God Bless America.”
In addition, BU president Bashar Hanna served as a ceremonial member of Garrity’s transition team.
