Negro League baseball players Buck O'Neil and Bud Fowler have been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Bud Fowler (standing in the middle) with the Keokuk team of the Western League in 1885. Fowler, of course, was the first known African American professional baseball player. Bud Fowler is credited with inventing the first shin guards. White players were spiking him so often that he began to tape pieces of wood to his legs to protect himself.
