A Stanford research group has engineered S. cerevisiae, budding yeast, to manufacture morphine and other opioids from a precursor molecule. It is possible that these painkillers may, one day, be manufactured from scratch by microbes, eliminating the need for opium poppies.

Budding Yeast - asexual reproduction

1) A bud (swelling) forms at the surf of the cell.

2) The cell undergoes interphase - the DNA and organelles are replicated ready for the cell to divide.

3) The cell begins to undergo mitosis.

4) Nuclear division is complete - the budding cell contains a nucleus that has an identical copy of DNA as the parent cell.

5) Eventually, the bud separates or pinches off from the parent cell, producing a new, genetically identical yeast cell.
