In regards to the asks saying Tarou isn't trying, I'll have to greatly disagree on this one. Heck, I'll even say that he's always been trying, even before our current Donbros became Donbros
Why do I think of that? Mostly it comes down to his job as a delivery man. We alr know that he loves the job (could be misremembering the exact words but it's from ep 6) despite the fact that he's getting a lot of good and bad experiences of being one. He knows that a few of his customers he interacted with became Hitosuki, whether he knows that it was caused by his interactions is up to him. However, even with all these bad experiences, does he quit? He doesn't! He still wants to create bonds with people he meets, even if it's only a one-time encounter. He's getting exposure on how humans react to try to understand them better on his own.
The reason why he doesn't seem to make much progress (imo) is because he's doing the deliveries alone. When interacting with others that isn't the Donbros/Jin, he only has himself to decide on how the conversation will go. Very likely no one else would bother to tell him on how to adjust on talking to them (Does that make any sense? Not sure.) We don't know how long Jin has been jailed for (last time we saw him with Tarou was when he was a child), and with the Donbros that we know only recently working together, Tarou still has a long way to go to understand happiness.
Tldr, Tarou has always been trying to understand people, but his circumstances and lack of people willing to help him prevents him from making much progress
I think the amount of thought he’s shown to put into answering what seems to be a simple a$$ question is more than enough proof of him trying.
But yeah, I agree too. The lack of help is the reason why he isn’t making much progress.
