9 years ago tomorrow, you lost your fight to the War We Bring Home. The 4th of July was forever changed.
I'll be out of the net for a bit, so I wanted to say you are still in my heart today.
Best damned Redleg I knew.
Sometimes life will drag you down no matter how well you feel you are doing
Q, your loss still hurts. The 4th of July was forever changed that day.
If you are hurting, call someone, reach out reach up someone will answer. They can't take a way the hurt but they can share the weight.
A SOLDIER WITH PTSD FELL IN A HOLE and couldn’t get out.
A Senior NCO went by and the Soldier with PTSD called out for help. The Senior NCO yelled at him, told him to suck it the fuck up, dig deep & drive on, then threw him a shovel. But the Soldier with PTSD could not suck it up and drive on so he dug the hole deeper.
A Senior Officer went by and the Soldier with PTSD called out for help. The Senior Officer told him to use the tools your Senior NCO has given you then threw him a bucket. But the Soldier with PTSD was using the tools his Senior NCO gave him so he dug the hole deeper and filled the bucket.
A psychiatrist walked by. The Soldier with PTSD said, “Help! I can’t get out!” The psychiatrist gave him some drugs and said, “Take this. It will relieve the pain.” The Soldier with PTSD said thanks, but when the pills ran out, he was still in the hole.
A well-known psychologist rode by and heard the Soldier with PTSD cries for help. He stopped and asked, ” How did you get there? Were you born there? Did your parents put you there? Tell me about yourself, it will alleviate your sense of loneliness.” So the Soldier with PTSD talked with him for an hour, then the psychologist had to leave, but he said he’d be back next week. The Soldier with PTSD thanked him, but he was still in the hole.
A priest came by. The Soldier with PTSD called for help. The priest gave him a Bible and said, “I’ll say a prayer for you.” He got down on his knees and prayed for the Soldier with PTSD, then he left. The Soldier with PTSD was very grateful, he read the Bible, but he was still stuck in the hole.
A recovering Soldier with PTSD happened to be passing by. The Soldier with PTSD cried out, “Hey, help me. I’m stuck in this hole!” Right away the recovering Soldier with PTSD jumped down in the hole with him. The Soldier with PTSD said, “What the fuck are you doing? Now we’re both stuck in here!!” But the recovering Soldier with PTSD said, “Calm down, bro. It’s okay. I’ve been here before. I know how to get out.“

THIS POST CONTAINS AN IMAGE OF DEATH AND CAN UPSET SOME. I spent the weekend in Winnemucca, Nevada with good friends for a birthday, it was a good weekend. On the drive home, as I often do, I was contemplating my place in this life, feeling insignificant in the presence of Mother Nature and her power, and living in the moment. Enjoying the rotations of snow storms and sun, the fields of Pronghorn Antelope and cattle when I saw a truck about 70 yards off the highway in a sagebrush field. It's not uncommon to see abandoned vehicles along the roads but something about it just looked odd. as I got closer there appeared to be blood all along the drivers side. I hit the skids on the Challenger and started sprinting to the truck. About 30 yards out it was clear what I was looking at, I attempted to call 911 and there is no cell service. As I was crossing the fence line to get to the truck a Sheriffs vehicle approaches. Because it was clear a shooting had occurred I laid my pistol on the gourd, walked well past it and put my hand above my head until he told me I could put them down after I explained I was just a passerby that recognized something was wrong. He said I could put my hands down and retrieve my pistol. My observation as a former LEO, this guy opted out of life driving at a good clip on the frontage road and somehow the truck ended up coasting to a stop 30 yards in a sage brush field. Damned shame. I don't know what was going on in the young guys life to put him there but I'm sure it was survivable.
Some are going to say I'm insensitive for taking this image, I'm telling you this is a learning moment. When you tap out, you leave this mess in your wake. This is what your kin and friends get to see and remember until they pass. The EMS on the left, who checked him for vitals, knew him. She broke down and barfed a moment later. If you opt out of life, the tragedy of your life only ends for you. I've lost 14 of my Brother and Sisters in arms it the War We Bring Home so this shook me a bit. If you feel like you are going to opt out of life, call someone, ask for help, please.
The War We Bring Home is a real fight, just because we're out doesn't mean we forget those who had our left and right in the fight. Buddy check, the life you save just might be the one that saved you once.
Is there a best buddy check method?
Is there a best buddy check method?
BWRAF? ABCDE!
Before you jump in the water to start scuba diving, you should check your buddy’s gear (and they should check yours), in an aptly named buddy check.
The best buddy check method is one that checks everything. It doesn’t really matter which method you use.
Outside of the agencies, people will say things like “start a the bottom, work up”, “start at the left foot, work up your left…

Dump valves: You have them
Dump valves: You have them
As a dive guide, I keep finding new divers who have no idea they have dump valves, what they’re for or when to use them. As they’re drifting upwards, head down, feet kicking wildly, they grab for their direct system / low-pressure inflator (LPI) and hold it out (now pointing almost straight down) and are totally confused as to why they’re having an uncontrolled ascent.
Some new divers are…
