#bug question

Ok so I understand why bees shouldn't be killed because of what they do for the planet, but what the fuck are ants useful for?? I have ever only seen these little creatures stealing trash and digging holes in the ground, what exactly do they contribute? Ants are literally one of the creatures that genuinely deserves extinction the most. I'm just genuinely curious are ants good for anything?

Is it true that one single moth is why computer bugs are called that?

I admittedly don't know all that much about engineering history or jargon so I looked into it. The term 'bug' has been used in engineeribg to describe a fault since at least the 1870s, with Thomas Edison using the term in a 1878 letter. The story you're referencing happened in 1947, some 70 years later, when a moth did cause problems (though to my displeasure it's unclear what kind of moth) in the Harvard Mark II and it was recorded "the first ACTUAL bug being found" with it being a double entendre on bug.

do y’all know of any good physical field guides for insects (possibly and arachnids)?

i know it’s really hard to . . . put them all in a book 💀 but i’d love to have some reliable (and up to date?) field guides for my own enjoyment

also specifically ones for texas is good too. . . i currently have the ‘common insects of texas’ guide by john and kendra abbot - which my dad got for me when i first started getting into bugs

also also if i had to get specific - a hymenoptera field guide would be so cool because i am a tad bit partial to ants and bees and wasps and sawflies

Hey bugblr could someone help me figure out what kinda bug this is? I live in northern Germany. The wings look kinda greenish when viewing it first hand. It's not very big

Hey bug tumblr, anyone able to recognize this guy? I’m at a loss. It’s approximately 5cm (~2 inches) long and while the closest thing I want to compare him to is a grass hopper variant, but he doesn’t quite look right.

The bug was swimming pretty far in the water, and flew away, hopefully off to chill somewhere else
