As gets discussed regularly other places, while I make stuff with a heavy fantasy/occult theme to it, I'm also a practitioner. If we want to get into specifics, I'm what you'd label a left-hand-path solitary occultist. I don't believe in deities outside of them being aspects of ourselves that can be worked with using magic and other tools to achieve certain results. (Yes, other forces than just gods as well, and many of those as external entities, but we're digressing away a LOT for still being in the first paragraph here.) Anyways, long and short, one of the biggest tools in my own inventory when it comes to magical practice is my main focusing tool- my bracer-

It gets worn every day, through all sorts of stuff, and after a full year of wear and tear, sweat, water, and all manner of other stuff... well, it's definitely time for the leather to get freshly replaced. This has become something of a yearly thing for me around my birthday (tomorrow) to get the bracer rebuilt, redesigned if necessary, and constructed, charged, etc. So, today, that's what we're doing.
First, up, tracing out the old bracer onto some fresh hide. Yes, it warped that much out of the straight lines it was originally cut into. So, on to the next part- getting a straight lined version of it significantly bigger (since I'm upgrading the design a bit) and cutting it out. Twice, because I'm layering the material like last year again- both for wrist protection, and some of the design elements.
All right, we're cut. Speaking of, time to go back to the old bracer, salvage out what hardware can be saved for the new one, and to clean out and tighten up bits that are getting moved over.
...we will not discuss the amount of manky gunk (yes, that’s a technical term) collected on the inside parts of the hardware. There's a reason this gets re-done yearly. Next up, getting the black layer of new hide traced for where the main core of all this goes.
And this would be the core. Crisis Engine. Dynamo. Thinger. KEY PIECE WITH A NON-DESCRIPT NAME.
The original version of this was built when I needed a regular magic interference barrier, especially while working shows that had me getting in close contact with thousands of people in a single day. Don't get me wrong, I like people, but big crowds are full of tons of all kinds of energy, and at the end of the day, I'd be so wrung out physically and mentally that I needed something to block off or pull away negative forces, whether they were directed at me or not. Hence, the dynamo. hematite specifically for negative energy absorption, copper and brass to ground it and give it a framework that doesn't directly connect the stone to me. Energy work is something I do regularly, and with this, it's a matter of inertia- setting up forces of energy, both positive and negative, flowing around the donut in a torus, spinning faster and faster until the movement is self sustaining. At the same time, the hematite draws off the negativity, purifying the energies flowing around the donut and holding all of it there for me to pull from for use as needed.
More on that in a minute- meanwhile, the next build stage- cutting holes into the black (top) layer for where the core and other sigils and designs will sit on and underneath the black.
And there's our cutouts- kept rough because burning the edges on these will both smooth and seal down a number of the imperfections. (Though it'll also warp and resize the leather some. Retrimming/reburning is always a guarantee on designs like this.) Now on to the fun part- sigils.
Here's the rough sketchwork of what all's getting burned into the lower layer. seven different sigils set up as easy-use functions with the bracer- stuff I commonly use that I can throw energy from the core at in a hurry when needed, and that'll have a small passive flow of energy constantly going to them at the same time, by being connected to the larger central sigil. Next up of course, is burning all of these in, and I'll give details on each as we go, starting from the top left.
The ægishjálmr, or Helm Of Awe. Used here both for it's standard purposes of being a "HEY I'M BIG AND AWESOME! NOTICE AND BEWARE ME!" as well as being an invocation to Odin (In both his Glad-of-War and Absolute Authority guises) at the same time.
Below that, the mark for Kali. Again, this is not standard right-hand-path paganism's attempt to beseech an outside Deity. This is about invoking aspects of a concept that already exist in myself. That said, the idea of Kali is still not something to use lightly- this isn't a tool to invoke victory over an opponent or even to use in any kind of situation where you're after a positive outcome. However, when you need to nuke an entire site from orbit, just to be sure, it does the job. Also useful in my own case for destroying any and all existing magic in or on an area where I'm using it.
Below Kali is one recognizable to those who followed my Sigilum Mox work- the counter-surveillance sigil, used to warp and increase the paranoia of those attempting to watch. Also an invocation to the Outsider- more the Derleth/Lovecraft cosmic madness that cannot be comprehended by mortals who gaze upon it than the Emo Kid Deity of Bethesda game fame. Used both as a combative tool and as personal ward of the madness that is my own life and headspace.
Now from the top of the right side and working our way downwards, Erzulie, specifically for the passion and sex aspects of a number of her versions.
Again, this is invoking aspects of an archetype in and of itself, and is NOT how one does traditional voodoo or works with external loa or other entities. In short, don't try this at home, and try to call it voodoo, or respecting actual voodoo culture. The only similarity here is invoking the IDEA of parts of an entity- the sigil of her veve acts as visual shorthand for the idea and is reinforced by cultural, historical, and religious knowledge.
And below Erzulie, we have....
...yup. Just a circle. More specifically the buddhist ensō, the expression of enlightenment, the void, and the creativity of no-mind minimalism. Done deliberately as an imperfect circle to also bring the wabi-sabi aspect into it.
And for the final symbol on the right-hand side we of course get around to Lucifer. Invoked as a spirit of rebellion, light, and the overthrow of authority.
And in the middle of all of this, the banishment/empowerment sigil I put together ages ago- an inverse heptagram to describe the forces of the world, powered by the sigil of sulphur indicating sorcerous force in general. sitting directly under the core also enables it to act as a secondary barrier, keeping negative influences that haven't yet been strained out by the core from penetrating furhter, and making sure I'm not drawing on energy stored in the bracer unless I'm intentionally working around the sigil to do so. And yes, lines connecting all of the sigils together, sending energy through to add power to the symbols even when not in fully active use.
I should also note one detail here- there's a number of additional lines added after this photo's been taken that will NOT be shown here. purely because I believe some things need to be kept back in the making of a tool like this. You've seen the full main structure, I'm just holding back some of the support beams and reinforcement so that it can't be fully copied and used directly against this version, if that makes sense.
Now, on to assembly.
Here's both layers fully burned- you can see where edges no longer match up due to the warping and shrinking that happens with burnwork I've also trimmed away the bottom edge entire from one of the holes, both due to excessive warping and just for aesthetic look. Now to trim those up and set up all our rivet-holes for anchoring these two pieces, plus the core, plus the straps and buckles to make it wearable.
Holes punched, and the core is set into place. See the buckling around the edges? This is what you get when adding a 3-dimensional item with irregular curves into a mostly 2D design. Unaccounted for pull, because everything's being pulled slightly up in the middle. That's why the rest of the holes got punched before this piece got added- the extra rivets in the rest of the bracer will help smooth out and realign that.
Now to get the rest of it set.
And there we are- fully finished and ready for wear. Tonight, I'll be invoking the sigils for the first time, charging them with their respective duties and energies, and sealing them down into the bracer via intention and music- also re-visualizing the same working I described earlier with the core to give it a bit of extra momentum for the next year. But that's what there is to it.
If you're thinking about doing this as a project for yourself, I fully recommend it, but I strongly recommend you start small, and work with aspects, deities, and influences you know well when putting yours together. These are designed to be highly personal pieces, and just copying this for yourself is not going to get you the same, or necessarily favorable results.
