Your mom was a human and your dad was a mershark so when you were born it wasn’t a surprise that you were a mershark and your parents loved you but there was one problem, you were bad at being a mershark. You were shy and quiet so when you had to talk to other merpeople you were quiet and soft spoken which didn’t make much sense to most of the other merpeople since you were supposed to be part shark so everyone assumes that you're just a mermaid and thinks someone lied to you when you were born since mersharks are mean and loud. You were sitting on a rock making something out of seashells for your mom when something hit you in the back of the head.
“I’m sorry,” someone with a deep voice said from behind you as you looked at where the attack came from. “My pet and I were just playing and didn’t know that you were over here.”
“It’s okay,” you said with a kind smile as you looked at the fish and merman. “It didn’t hurt that much.”
I can’t believe that this cute guy is talking to me!
“Are you sure?” He asked while looking at you with genuine worry.
No one looks at me like that at school they always mock and make fun of me!
“I’m okay,” you said again trying to hide your love handles. “Like I said it didn’t hurt that much.”
“I want to do something to make it up to you,” he said while scratching the back of his neck. “You know, to make the situation better?”
“Um okay,” you said a little taken aback by the request. “I’m free tomorrow if that’s okay with you?”
“Okay tomorrow it is then,” he said with a smile seeming more confident in himself than earlier. “I’ll meet you here tomorrow?”
“Sure what time?” You ask while swimming around him happily.
The next day, you went to the place you two agreed to meet, and while you were waiting for him to show up, you saw a bull shark hybrid trying to attack a smaller fish hybrid. You couldn’t stand there and do nothing, so you swam up to the bull shark hybrid.
“Stop bothering him!” You said loudly so the bull shark could hear you.
“Excuse me?” The bull shark asked you in a threatening way.
“I said, ' Stop bothering him,” You stood your ground and it was obvious he didn’t like that. “It’s not nice!”
“Or what?” He asked while laughing to himself like you were a joke.
“Or I’ll hurt you!” You said in a threatening tone.
“HA!” He laughed at you before turning back to his victim. “Sure you will.”
You got mad at him and swam at full force at the bull shark and bit it as hard as you could.
“OW!” He yelled in pain before hitting you.
As you and the bull shark fought the merman who asked you out was watching from a distance in shock, horror, and disbelief. As you beat the bull shark the merman watched as you whipped the blood off your face and was mesmerized as he watched you. When you noticed him you could only stare at him in horror since he wasn’t supposed to see that since you’re not like those other savages you’re more refined than the other mersharks! You swam away while crying from embarrassment. You didn’t notice him following you until he yelled.
“WAIT!” You stopped when you heard him yell.
“Why?” You asked with tears in your eyes.
“Because I think you’re beautiful!” He said with a look in his eyes that made you uncomfortable. “I still want to be with you!”
“Why?” You asked trying to cover the blood on yourself. “I’m a savage!”
“So?” He said while looking at you with a smile. “You can protect yourself from others and what’s not to love about that?”
“Really?” You asked while looking at him in a hopeful way.
He nodded and you went on a date as you two had planned.

Carcharhinus leucas
BULL SHARK SWIMS 7,290 KILOMETRES IN RECORD MIGRATION
A recent study revealed that a female bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) travelled at least 7,290 kilometres from the Mozambique Channel to Nigeria, crossing from the Indian Ocean into the Atlantic in what is now the longest recorded movement for this species. The finding was made possible by an acoustic transmitter implanted in South Africa in 2021 and recovered when the shark was captured near Lagos in July 2024. Bull sharks have long been considered coastal residents with relatively limited movements and a strong preference for warm, estuarine environments, making this ocean-crossing journey a remarkable exception that challenges previous assumptions about their ecology.
The shark’s route included passing through the Benguela upwelling, a major cold-water system along the coasts of South Africa and Namibia that has traditionally served as a biogeographic barrier for tropical species. Researchers suggest that climate change, by altering the temperature and dynamics of such systems, may be enabling new migratory pathways for widely distributed marine animals. In addition to expanding our understanding of bull shark ecological flexibility, this event highlights the value of large-scale acoustic tagging programmes and international collaboration in tracking the movements of highly mobile and potentially vulnerable species.
