Did you know that Morrison's Bumblebee (Bombus morrisoni) is a species of bumblebee found along the Pacific edge of North America? Typically found in scrubby areas, this species is believed to be in decline, disappearing from some of its local environments. They are pollinators for various shrubs and flowers, especially alfalfa.

Just published in Forest Ecology and Management! Cole et al. 2025 (see link for full paper) discusses the benefits of thinning and prescribed burns for bumble bees and butterflies in California forests. Careful management of these forests, including limited amounts of fire, leads to decades-long increases in bumble bee and butterfly richness and abundance!

I love getting to contribute art to a study like this one that shows how we can make a positive impact on our native invertebrates!
