Year of the Rabbit! 🐰🇰🇷
One relationship dynamic that I loved to see and that is so underrated is Inuyasha and Shippo. I love how Inuyasha goes from bonking Shippo in the head and giving him a hard time, to calling him "great warrior Shippo" and giving him credit when he uses his fox magic. And Shippo goes from constantly pranking and teasing Inuyasha to looking up to him as a brave strong fighter. They're like the brothers they never had and I really enjoyed seeing how far they came in the series.
They really went a long way, didn't they? Although the bonking was sometimes excessive and the teasing could have been seen as insensitive once in a while, I did like their dynamic a lot. And I truly enjoyed to see their relationship develop.
You nailed it on the head when you said they're like the brothers they never had. And I think this is true especially in Inuyasha's case. Shippo might be a full demon, but he is also a orphaned child who has no one to resort to. It's safe to assume Inuyasha saw a lot of himself in that scared little boy trying to act brave and make it on his own.
So after Kagome left them no choice but to travel together, Inuyasha unconsciously brought upon himself the responsibility to be for Shippo the older brother he never had. Because he knew if Sesshomaru had been there for him the way he's trying to be there for Shippo, his life would have been vastly different.
And you can see this feeling not noly with Shippo, but with Sota and Bunza as well. There's a lot of tough love, but his soft side is very present too.
And the three boys all ended up, if not hero worshiping him, at least admiring and looking up to Inuyasha as a role model.
Which is why I'm positive he would have been a great father. And of course, his relationship with Shippo had its ups and downs. But most of their conflict comes from Inuyasha being hard on Shippo to tough him up (men don't cry) or Shippo being protective of Kagome's feelings. Both of them getting over their issues to build a relationship for themselves is what makes it so special.
My personal headcanon is that they grew the most closer during the three years in which Kagome was gone. She was obviously very important to each member of the Inugang in different ways and everyone dealt with her absence as best as they could. But Miroku and Sango were busy starting a family of their own. It's easier to move on with this kind of distraction.
Inuyasha and Shippo, though? For them it was a harder blow. She was a mother figure to Shippo and the love of Inuyasha's life. And remember: for a considerable amount of time, before Miroku and Sango came along, it was just the three of them. They would have understood each other's pain in a way the others couldn't.
And that unconditional support would have brought them together even more.
