Downliners Sekt - Silent Ascent (InFine-2014)
Whilst the DNA of Buiral's breakthrough record Untrue certainly has seeped into almost every area of music you can move to his later works which have distanced him greatly from that format are still very much untouched. Downliners Sekt's new records abrupt embrace of Untrue textures is therefore pretty well buffered, this after all is still very much a techno record, not a bass one and it packs some exemplary moments. These guys have been at it for over a decade with very little to show for it but Silent Ascent is a very worthwhile deep trip into them finding themselves, they've used Burial as a catalyst but the best moments on this record, "Balt Shakt I"'s innocent peak that breaks into shuddering bass, the cultish horror movie samples of the back half of "This American Life" that feel strangely euphoric, lean more on their barcelona house heritage and they are all them. It makes a very overused and abused sound feel strangely and beautifully new and exciting.
