Damon was always very close with his mother, and because of that his father resented him. He didn’t like the fact that Damon would rather follow his mother around rather than him. Because of this when his mother died Damon was completely heartbroken, even moreso than his own father. It was the reason that he joined the military, to get away from his dad.
