Repost from @socialworkerscankissmyass on Instagram: “Non-profits can be a helpful tool but are not the end-all/be-all to taking part in social movements and change. Do not believe that being a non-profit automatically guarantees that you are doing healing, justice-centered, trauma-informed services.
Stop giving financially to non-profits just because they ask kindly for it. Stop giving financially to non-profits just because they send you “please help us” letters in the mail. Stop giving financially to non-profits just because the CEO knows important people.
Is the organization led by people in the community or with the experience that they claim to “serve” or is it led by folks with a savior complex? Is your donation going to go towards funding the staff doing the work and the services being provided or is it going to go into the leadership team and CEO’s pocket? Is this a grassroots non-profit founded in community organizing or is it an organization co-opting movements for financial and political gain?
Do your research. Look up their IRS 990 form to see how much money they spend and where.”
