September 1, 1807: Former Vice President Aaron Burr is arrested in Mississippi for complicity in a plot to establish a Southern empire in Louisiana and Mexico. Burr is charged with treason for assembling an armed force to take New Orleans and separate the Western from the Atlantic states. He was ultimately never convicted due to a lack of evidence but did endure a self-imposed exile in Europe until 1811.
