sat here thinking about how irving b. is specifically the mdr employee that is the most religious in terms of the handbook and kier and all that so he feels guilt for his romantic feelings towards burt. he feels guilt but his love is also what brings him to the realization that it’s all nonsense and it’s unfair (yet he keeps believing in his own ways because it’s all he has). and it is just SO important that he’s queer because we see star-crossed lovers/forbidden love portrayed through a straight lens so often but to take it and have it be queer but their love be taboo not because of their queerness but because of other circumstances really just feels so fulfilling in a way that is near impossible to describe.

thinking about Burt Goodman is killing me. Like he absolutely did horrible shit, probably killed people or did some very unethical experimentation to make severance happen (?). Fields and him call each other Attila as a fucking Petname. They are not good people lmao. When you consider yourself a sinner so you create a version of yourself that is lab-made and basically free from original sin.

The idea of innies being "complete souls" is used to justify severing oneself to have a hope of going to heaven. Enslaving yourself, creating a new soul, just to avoid the knowledge that your religion says you'll probably go to Hell for the things you've done. And then the severed floor has constant allegories to Hell and the Underworld. You're damning a 'soul' to Hell, but it's not Yours! Like hello???

It's so incredibly disturbing as a concept and then when you take into account how Irving's relationship with Burt was spurned by him deconstructing the ideology of Lumon, it makes me twitch. Like ohhhh maybe it is the opiate of the masses. Severance is literally cutting into your brain to create a new self, who is guided to follow a corporeligion. It's only when the innies reject the ideology that they know, everything that was taught to them, that they have the chance to rebel and feel love but also possibly die forever. Which that seems . A bit cruel for 2-5 year olds to accomplish !!
