Guide to Iceland by Frommer's
I love reading guidebooks to various countries. Lonely planet is good for understanding the average person from that country, as they include "Snap Shot" and "The National Psyche" sections. For more day to day stuff I would suggest Frommer's guide books. I recently got my hands on Iceland! So I've learned a lot about the country and I'm not even done with it yet!
So some fun things I've learned so far:
Iceland is such a safe and personable country that parents often feel comfortable with leaving their children with local babysitters.
Icelandic buses are impressive machines chugging right through rocky terrain and raging rivers (Bus 62!!)
Write, publish and read more books per capita.
Icelanders often travel in campers, the concept of a 'portable hotel' holds great appeal in a country with so much open space and available campgrounds.
Also I didn't write this down word for word but they are Sheepboys! (Get it? Like Cowboys only instead of wrangling cows and herding cows around they do it with sheep) They don't often use hormones, antibiotics or pesticides on their cattle/food and Icelandic tap water is considered the cleanest in the world. However on a note always watch your children as there aren't a lot of guard rails and other protective fencing around dangerous areas. Which I can understand because if they did that shit would get expensive. And a lot of accidents occur by foreigners not taking proper action on gravel roads (do they not have a lot of gravel roads in Europe? What an odd thing for me to try and imagine....paved roads everywhere!). I think today is just going to be me posting guide book stuff that I find interesting.
