3. Busting Visions - Zeus
My first experience with Zeus was seeing them live at the Wolfe Island Music Festival this past summer. All the bands I had seen before Zeus had left me uninspired as every act was peddling some kind post-rock, post-pop, or post-something else. Let's just say there were a lot of laptops on stage. It was a grim scene. But then, early in the evening, 4 guys waltzed on stage who clearly had no tricks up their collective sleeve. Bass, drums, keys, and guitar - no more no less. Their set was like a breath of fresh air. Riff-oriented, melody-laden, and loud, it immediately reminded of me all the things I love about rock n' roll music. For that I was very grateful.
The record they were supporting then (and continue to support now) is no less great than that first show I so fondly recall. A glorious mélange of influences permeates the whole album. It's like some alternative dimension where The Beatles, The Band, and Edgar Winter hang out, drink beer, and play together regularly. It's also apparent from the excited energy in all these tunes that this band really loves what they do and must have an amazing time writing songs with each other. Practically every tune is teeming with unusual percussion, freaky keys, and incredibly beautiful backup vocals. It's probably safe to say that their well of creative juices is filled to the brim. But while this record is packed with sonic curve-balls and rich production the execution is always spot on - it never seems too busy, over-cooked, or gimmicky. Everything has its place and comes in at the right time.
A fantastic album from one of Canada's best rock outfits.
This entire album is just brilliant.
With a data entry job, I've been listening to so much music, and a large part of my listening has been retrospective through my Best Albums of 2012 list. I'm in March now.Busting Visions was one of the biggest standouts of March and is criminally underrated. You won't see it anywhere on a Best of the Year list but if it doesn't make my top ten, it's close.
If you asked me to describe their sound I'd say it's like a punk rock Beatles made a baby with Of Montreal and (at times) Queen.
This song, "Are You Going To Waste My Time?" has a classic hard rock feel to it that makes it different from a lot of the material on the record, but I have to say it's the track that hooked me in and got me listening to the rest of it.
Take some time, throw this down on your digital turntable and let the whole record spin. It's a fantastic ride.
