The gang at A&C share their favourite tracks of 2015. Stream the playlist on Spotify.
Aaron: Drake - No Tellin "I gotta keep watchin for oppers, cause anything's possible, yeah."
Adam: Thundercat - Them Changes Given all the stiff competition, I think this track really embodies a true complete song. It blends various genres, while maintaining a consistent level of creativity and theme throughout. I love Thundercat's technique of writing a dark love song, while spinning into a funky tune that makes everyone wana move and sing along. In the profound words of "Actraiser1" (youtube number 1 comment), "Perfect music to eat potatoes to".
Bled: Battles - The Yabba Turn on Battles' new album. Put a pot of coffee on, and then open a book and read the day away. Or go for a long fast drive. Or let it give you the motivation to jog and exercise. I only did 2 of those 3, but all are possible.
Cam: Kayne West (feat. Allan Kingdom, Theophilius London, and Sir Paul McCartney) - All Day Kanye doubles down on the maximalist tendencies of 2013's Yeezus and claps back with the most hype song of 2015 featuring a literal knight. The performance at the BRIT Awards was similarly perfect. Also, Allan Kingdom is Canadian, so shouts to him.
Diedra: Spring King - City This song fuelled a lot of running and air drumming this year.
Ian: Leon Bridges - Brown Skin Girl Spent many a night with this song, snuggling my wife and dog with a bottle of pinot. Great year for music and living!
Isis: Sufjan Stevens - 4th Of July
Jamie: Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best I am obsessed with the lyrics to this song (and Courtney Barnett in general).
Jonathan: Win Win - Been So Long In a year that passed so quickly but took so long, this is the song that reminds me of the cycles of life that transcend calendar time.
Kevin: Kurt Vile - Pretty Pimpin
Mallory: Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Multi-Love So tough to choose one! Its psychedelic and funky and kinda brings me back to another time but still has a really relevant message about modern relationships. Also doesn't hurt that its catchy as hell.
Marcello: Post Malone - White Iverson
Matt: Bully - Trying An infectious, attitude-infused rocker about the struggle to get out of your own head.
Meg: Hop Along - Waitress Hoooly bud, does this gal ever have a voice. I’ve listened to this record more than I’ve called my own mom all year. I love it. Also big shoutout to every server who has ever just fucking hated their tables and wanted them to gtfo <3
Nico: US Girls - Damn That Valley My favourite song of the year. US Girls 2015 album Half Free is a unparalleled and refreshing new sound in pop music: Richly layered with DIY sonic experimentation, very danceable grooves and Meg Rhemy's one of a kind vocal style.
Nicole: Jason Derulo - Want You Want Me - Tried denying its catchy-ness for a few months but eventually caved and listen on a regular basis :)
Tara: Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti - Baby This song was my most favourite to put on in the background of any social situation / party - I was the person attentively listening to this jam playing out, no matter how many times I’ve heard it, versus any conversation seemingly taking place right in front of me. It is distractingly good and will carry over each year (albeit I think I was late to the party on this one anyway…)
Hi! Last month we bounced over to LA for a couple of days to make a music video with our good (and suprememly talented) friends Rostam and Josh [Goleman]. We set out for Joshua Tree at around 3:30 in the morning, with our boxes of Joe, rollerblades, and analgesic anamorphic lenses in tow, and by 5pm we were wrapping beneath the Santa Monica pier. There were a bunch of stops in between that I don’t particularly recall but apparently (spoiler alert) included wind farms, street hockey, and a guy in a tunnel with a tambourine. I think I ate a burrito at some point.
This video fits right into our whole (unintentional) MO for making this record - working with old friends for whom we have a ton of respect and, perhaps even more importantly, trust. Plus, Rostam had a hand in writing, recording, and producing the song (Water), and so it makes sense that he was involved with both the concept and execution of the video. Hopefully the result is a testament to the burrito fun we had making it.
P.S. Tickets for our tour are on sale today. Pick up yours before they’re gone!
We filmed performances of a couple of songs prior to our album release show at National Sawdust in New York in October. This is a live version of ‘Game Show’.
The song was one of the earliest ones from Are You Alone? and went through a few different phases. The lyrics were quite different initially. Emotionally it’s not like the rest of the songs on AYA but the song is one of our personal favorites.

“Are You Alone?” is a song about life! People doing things and feeling things and falling all over the place! Lots of emotions! Just trying to keep going! Sometimes it’s easy! Sometimes it’s hard! It’s a song about caring what happens! To other people!
