Growing up ugly people never really had crushes on me so now this shit at work has me thrown about 5 different ways I cannot believe I have to get my bosses involved why can't you just be a professional and keep your fucking thoughts to yourself

Big diamond engagement rings, chocolate and flowers on Valentine’s Day, both were only invented by capitalism. Romantic, isn’t it?
Up until the 20th century diamonds weren’t anything special in regards of jewels. Only then did De Beer have the need to sell their diamonds and they coined it as a symbol of love and enternity.
People were celebrating Valentine’s Day in a very lowkey way. Because of its proximity to ancient spring celebration it was also associated with love, but not really an important holiday in any way. Writers referenced it in poems, but that was about it. Then English companies started to promote it. Mainly to make people write each other so that the post had to do something. Then Americans furthered this by making the first commercial postcards. Then came the addition of flowers and chocolate. Since the late 20th century it is promoted more and more heavily and now a very important day... for companies that sell chocolates, flowers, postcards, and little gifts where they put hearts on.
