I see so many ACOTAR complaints about the fae characters that go something along the lines of "they've had hundreds of years to change this cultural/structural problem! why haven't they done it!"

But like... the thing about their entire species being immortal is that there's little changeover in their population. The reason we see so much change over the centuries in the real world is because the old die off. It's a lot easier to convince a young person to form more progressive thoughts than it is to change the mind of someone already set in their ways.

Hundreds of years for the fae is NOT the same as hundreds of years for mortals when it comes to progressing as a society.

That isn't to say none of them should try to enact progress, and obviously some of them do exactly that, but to say that it should obviously be done because they've had hundreds of years to do it just isn't a great argument imo

#this is all without even diving into the complex systemic roots of discrimination in most if not all cultures to have ever existed #because if i started in on that this would get way too long #but like... yeah #i don't think some of yall realize how fucking difficult it has to be to walk the line as a ruler trying to push progress while your people #cling to the traditions that have formed their way of life for centuries #knowing that any decision you make could push them into open rebellion and actually end up harming those vulnerable populations #more than helping them #it's all politics babyyyy #acotar

as a writer who both loves tragedy and doomed romance, and happy endings, who currently wants to write a lot of horror gothic whatever... i'm curious as to which impulse i should lean harder into: the tropes i enjoy in media, or the (fanfiction based?) impulse to end things mostly happy

#in my defense i do have a novel planned where the ending is very downbeat while also providing some catharsis #but like... yeah #the novel i'm working on is a rewrite of a short story from undergrad and my teacher thought my characters didnt deserve #the quote punishment of my attempt at an ambiguous bly tma style ending #and then i decided i didnt want to doom those characters and have been trying to rewrite it #but now im wondering if thats going too against the grain/#too anti genre #like i feel like the best horror that i love doesnt tie things up neatly #although i can list examples #but the softer your story is the less people think its horror #but also there's a lot of other downbeat endings for other characters and i do have a pair of 1800s doomed lesbians lmao #so #idk #writing
