I had a very enjoyable day at #GlobalBirdFair in #Rutland. Great to attend brilliant talks from and chat to Heatherlea, Harry from Save The House Sparrow, chat to David Lindo and other great people, see other great talks and see a Sparrowhawk being ringed at the ringing demo! A lovely day. Also had a brief look at Lyndon Nature Reserve tonight where it was brilliant to see Brown Hawker, Purple Hairstreak, Small Tortoiseshells, Gatekeepers, Ringlets, Comma (a few of these making a great big #ButterflyCount), Bullfinch, Great Crested Grebes, Common Tern and Rabbit. https://www.instagram.com/p/CgFhIFcqrEw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This #summer I have been thrilled to bear witness to a bumper year of Painted Lady butterflies in a once in a decade spectacle. I have seen them at so many places, so far twenty one distinct locations some of these I saw them at on more than one occasion. To put that into perspective, with my getting into butterflies the year after the last mass emergence of this species, my previous best was my three sightings last year. It’s no exaggeration to say I have seen them everywhere I go this summer seeing them in my county, on two holidays further north and surrounding counties to mine of the west and east. The places ranging from our garden where I took the first of these picture to the Farne Islands up in Northumberland indeed that was one extraordinary week seeing my first batch of these butterflies this year which may have extended into the 100’s. Magdalen Hill another of the locations I took the other picture of one there, that sighting and the garden allowed me to include one in a big #ButterflyCount and tonight Winchester Railway station became the latest addition to my list of places I have seen them.
