As much as I would love to post about BTPTE right now, there is something I need to address that is crucial for UK residents and bird fans alike.

If you live in the UK, please please PLEASE make your home Swift-friendly!

Now, I don't usually address such serious topics on this blog, but I've always had a passion for birds. We get a lot of Common Swifts in our area, and I often wonder where their nests lie.

They often rely on crevices in houses that are easy to access. This becomes an issue when people try to evict them, or put up scaffolding.

I get it, houses need repair otherwise it could become an issue, but at least try and support the local wildlife by taking measures to ensure that Swifts are able to live safely.

These birds are red in terms of conservation status. To directly quote the RSPB website "For every ten Swifts zooming across our skies in 1995, there were only about three by 2022."

There is a tutorial on how to build a nest for Swifts on the RSPB website, if you want to help without offering up your roof.

Save our Swifts in the UK, please. We need kind souls out there to help these poor birds to repopulate our skies. Check out the Swift Awareness Week of 2026 (June 27th to July 5th) to support the Swift population.

In the light of the RSPB advice about feeding garden birds over the summer - basically: don’t, with a few exceptions - I’m going back to providing live mealworms with all the accompanying ickiness about keeping them in the fridge. Wish me luck.
