Thinking about going in with @prismatic-bell on a badge maker, both so she can make buttons of her artwork to sell, and so I can have promotional buttons at my tables.

The only brand I'm familiar with is the old standby Badge-a-minit, and what looks like our best investment would be the 2.25"/1.25" combo bench press machine, for $230-ish. (Which works out to $115 each, if we do this 50/50)

Is anyone familiar with other brands of button/badge makers, that are better/worse/different than BAM, less expensive, more versatile, etc? Pros/cons re: supplies, refills, ease of use?

I am going to google, but I like hearing from people who actually use the stuff.

Hi there! Well, letsee. I splurged and ordered THIS really nice Neil Enterprises button maker through Amazon.  It was more expensive than some of the others I found on the site at the time (aka very cheap children’s toys with very bad reviews), but there honestly aren’t many options in the market to begin with. From what I’ve seen there’s another company that’s starting selling comparable button makers (very creatively named ‘Button Maker’), but they seem to be just as or even MORE expensive, and none of their products have reviews on the site. I’m not … terribly trusting of sellers like that.

But that aside, everybody who reviews the Neil Enterprises one says it’s the best, and I definitely agree with the rating. It’s sturdy, all metal, and very easy to use. You can make a button in literally seconds. It comes 100 button parts to get you started, and a round cutter/ cutting glass/ spare blades. A downside is the shipping (since it’s through a third party seller, it ain’t free, even with Amazon Prime, and it’s outrageously high). But I will say that I DID make back all the money I initially spent (woo), and that’s including the cost of shipping and additional button parts (I went ahead and ordered 1000 extra parts from the same company so that I wouldn’t have to pay more for shipping for a very long time. I’m also happy to say they’re just as good as the parts that initially come with the maker).

Basically, it was expensive (my order was like $400 total and I almost died when I clicked the ‘place order’ button). I wasn’t sure if I wanted to spend all that money up front, but I did, and it was worth it for me. This baby is gonna last for years. I’d say that making the purchase depends on how much you’re planning on using it/ selling. I’d imagine that paying to have buttons made somewhere else MIGHT be cheaper if you weren’t making as many, but I personally never looked into that option. If you’d still like to consider that option, Google could probably fill you in better than me. Hope this was helpful!

I want to buy a button maker but it's so expensive and I don't know how I would sell anything of mine (cause I have handmade, sharpied shoes of shows done too.) and yeah. I would never make the money back up. I'm gonna see if they have any on Amazon and maybe use my $100 giftcard and then the rest if from my pocket?! I need to think about it. They're expensive on Ebay too. Any idea on how to promote my stuff if I make an Etsy account or something?

An Etsy account is a good way to go. There are small fees and such for selling but Etsy has more traffic than other sites so you get more exposure.  The best thing I can suggest is make sure that your photos look nice and clear and are brightly lit. Better photos will definitely get more attention. And tag your items really well. Make sure you mention the name of the show, some characters, and anything specific to the product your selling if it’s a fandom item.

As for Button Makers there are some cheaper ones on Amazon and Ebay but make sure you don’t go too cheap or the machine won’t last very long. I’ve had my smaller machine for a year and a half and have probably made over 10,000 buttons with it. It’s still going strong :)  This is the type of machine I have. They’re really sturdy and heavy but they last. It’s also a really good idea to get a circle punch at the same time, especially if you plan on making a lot of buttons. I spent an extra $180 to get a really nice circle punch when I got my button maker and it’s still sharp and still punches out the designs with no problem.

Here is where I got my button makers and circle cutters. The machines are $270 for almost all the button sizes and the circle cutter is an extra $180. So yeah, they’re expensive but if you come up with a bunch of awesome designs then it will eventually pay for itself.  You can also try to do bulk orders to make up the cost. I’ve done custom bulk buttons for a local charity and you can approach businesses and such too if you want to try and get some bulk orders.
