Another goal conceded...any thoughts? Here are mine (why am I doing this again?) -
First, let’s get the basics straight. What was the central defender doing? When the opponents gained the possession, the defender moved forward (away from the goal line) to put their strikers in the offside position. This tactic (“playing offside trap”) is typical and happens all the time.
Why didn’t he just run faster? I’d say he should have run faster so that it would look like he gave everything, but I doubt it would make any difference: the defender was (intentionally) further from the goal and the opponent striker had the spatial advantage.
Normally such advantage should not be a problem for the defending team because we have the offside rule. But the offside trap did not work this time so the goal was rewarded. Question: how do you play offside trap properly? There is a video from FourFourTwo explaining this very well: Playing the offside trap as a full-back: the do's and don'ts
When the centre back decides to play offside trap he doesn’t have time to look around to check his wide full backs. Instead he just needs to be confident that he is the last defender, knowing that his full back is never deeper than himself. In other words, the position of the centre back who is responsible for playing such a tactic is a benchmark for the full backs. Deeper than that? You’d get trouble.
OK, I can’t rule out that he could have intercepted that pass if he had run faster. But the common sense is that the ball always moves faster than the player, than any player, which is the most fundamental reason for the existence of the offside rule. So, why not honour it? 😂
