As some of you may know, I’m blind. Fully blind, no light, no color, no nothing. I’ve always been visually impaired, but only went fully blind in the summer of 2020.
Before then, I was very into visual art mediums. Painting, pastels, but especially digital art. I can’t very well do that anymore, but I recently bought a product—the Sensational Blackboard—meant to help the blind draw on paper, and I’ll actually be meeting basically the official spokesman that first informed me of its existence later this year.
i decided a while ago that I want to document my progress of relearning how to draw using the board, so consider this basically day 1. I’m not going to be posting progress reports every day, but I will post whenever I complete a new drawing that isn’t just doodling individual things for practice. If anyone’s interested in seeing those pages, I can absolutely put them up. For now though, here’s the first finished piece:
I don’t completely like how it came out, but I’m expecting that. I felt the same way when I was first learning to draw. It’ll take time, as annoying as that is. I’m going to keep trying though.
for anyone who doesn’t know, the character is from my favorite audio drama, Killjam XXX. Originally, I was trying to draw one of the two main leads, Faustina. I wanted to give her glasses with an athletic strap and bangs that touched the topside of the frames. Partway through drawing the hair though, I realized that the shape felt more like her agent, Anna (who, incidentally, I didn’t know had a K in her surname until just now when checking the spelling XP). I didn’t draw her mouth because I knew I’d fuck it up, and the blackboard only works with tools that can’t be erased. Was going to give her a pearl necklace, but I like the choker more, though I’ll definitely be refining it as I practice more
