For “Unified”, the design is an exclusive colorway of “Our Fight - Mini” from Allies & Champions 1. It reads “Your fight is my fight is their fight is our fight”. A team sport. A group project. There is no way we all get there without one another. . For “Episodes”, the design is an exclusive colorway of “None of Us”. There is a quotation in MLK's "Letter From Birmingham Jail" that speaks to the essence of this shirt's meaning. "Moreover, I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Dec’s BXB Club is here! Symbols have power. I’ve always known this, but it hit a little different when I was in school for Visual Communications in Atlanta. I realized the “power” I had as a creator when designing logos and concepting ad campaigns. The ability to shape culture and behavior felt a little more important than merely selling products. What came directly out of that was me as an artist (www.rodney-white.com). I aimed to use the power/talent I was vested with, to do something meaningful. This month’s theme is another link in that chain. . The Stack: We often move through the world relying on what we know for survival—our own experiences. Simply surviving transcends to thriving when change and innovation enter; a metamorphosis built on what those before us have fought for, accomplished and experienced, along with our present contributions. Those generations are the layers (stripes) that build The Stack. . At the crux of every revolution, something phenomenal happens. A spark. An inspiration. Brilliance. The manifestation of hope. The audacious attempt. That is the star that sits at the front of the top of The Stack. It is the common goal that we’re co-building with our individual experiences. We’re stacking to change the now and generations to come (that top stripe). In the end, creating something like a flag representing this goal. The enclosure represents the world. A flag planted. We are here. We are still here. Our goal in this world. . This is a pattern symbolizing the step and repeat cycle of justice and equity we seek. . Justice, truth, love, equity, liberation, dignity, life, prosperity, community and forward movement - these are the very ideas built into the design of The Stack. The BXB Pattern is designed as a graphic articulation of the proliferation of these ideals. . “Unified” and “Episodes” this month will feature randomised colorways decorated with this pattern. This color is a dynamic symbol for confidence, strength, courage, determined ambition, and leadership. All traits embodied by both “Agitator” and “Energy I Be On”. . For “Unified”, the design is an exclusive colorway of “Agitator” from Allies & Champions. The original inspiration for the design was a by writer/author and anti-racist educator Rachel Cargle (@rachel.cargle) on an IG post. She posted a question from a white student and in which she responded “I believe the best thing we can do to enact change is to agitate the system.” I immediately saw it visually and went right away to design it. . For “Episodes”, “Energy I Be On” [Black Powered] was chosen because it perfectly complements the symbolism of the color maroon. In addition to its aforementioned meanings, creativity, beauty and love are also associations. And, when used in Kente fabrics, it also represents Mother Earth and healing. . One last thing. VOTE. August's BXB Club design is ready! Both “Unified” & “Episodes” are inspired by the freedom fighting giant, John Lewis. His recent passing left an enormous void in the resistance he helped create the blueprint for. We are forever indebted to him for the changemaking strategies we still use today. While neither of this month’s expressions are directly connected to a quote of his, the spirit of both are laced with his fighter’s energy. . For “Unified”, the design is an exclusive colorway of “None Of Us” from Allies & Champions 1. John Lewis was a pivotal Civil Rights Freedom Fighter who extended the battlefield for human rights and racial reconciliation to the halls of Congress as an elected official. Congressman Lewis carried “what’s right” in one hand and “what’s fair” in the other. He earned the name "Conscience of Congress”. . For “Episodes”, “Our Freedom Can’t Wait!” is inspired by the iconic photo of Malcolm X holding up a copy of 'Muhammad Speaks' with the headline of the same. John Lewis fought with urgency. He paved roads for future generations with his sacrifices, but he demanded freedom and liberation for RIGHT NOW. “Our Freedom Can’t Wait!” carries that same sense of immediacy. We've waited long enough. No more “Now is not the time…” . We continue in this resistance with John Lewises on both shoulders-- “what’s right” sits on one and “what’s fair” on the other.
