me after midnight, thinking about the last decade
Prenons un moment pour nous rendre compte ensemble que c’est déjà le 31 décembre. Est-ce que le temps s’est arrêté depuis le 25 matin ? Peut-être bien. Est-ce qu’on est prêt pour 2020 ? Peut-être pas.
2019 Recap
@theputterer inspired me. So I’m doing this thing.
*bass drop*
Personal:
- Adopted a dog! She is adorable and amazing, we are completely obsessed with her, and I love scratching her lil belly
- Spent a week in San Francisco! Beautiful city, amazing food, and the magnificence of Golden Gate Park cannot be understated.
- Had a very bad car accident, but miraculously we all came out completely unscathed even though the car was totaled. I am so very thankful for that every day.
- Started a new job after leaving a hella toxic work environment.
- Hated the new job.
- Quit and started another one.
- Became a salaried employee at job number 3. I am IN LOVE with this job, and would never have known about it without networking. So keep up your contacts and avoid burning bridges- you never know when somebody could come in clutch for you.
- Made some amazing new friends
- Got better at keeping succulents alive
- Made all As in my classes this fall even though it nearly killed me
- Planned a trip to Charleston, SC that was foiled by Hurricane Dorian
- GOT ACCEPTED AS A CONTESTANT ON ASK ME ANOTHER ON WNYC. So my voice will be coming to a podcast near you in January.
- Got better at decorating beautiful cakes
- Did not write nearly as much fic as I’d like to, and I am very sorry for that. But life got away from me, so I’ll try harder in 2020.
Movies:
New releases I saw:
- Downton Abbey (was not a fan, but it made my 95 year old grandmother very happy)
- On the Basis of Sex (good performances, weak writing)
- Harriet (Cynthia Erivo was great, did not like the tacked on fictional bits- Tubman’s story is amazing on its own)
- Avengers: Endgame (meh, the fat Thor thing was upsetting)
- John Wick (the third one, mainly just went because boyfriend wanted to see it)
- Ford vs Ferrari (was unhappy with the flatness of the one female character)
- Marriage Story (AMAZING)
- The Rise of Skywalker (I cried three times)
- Knives Out (LOVED IT)
2018 movies I saw late:
- Black Kkklansman (really loved this one- the Snap Judgment episode about it is also great)
- Roma (a really good view into intersectional feminism, motherhood, and love, explored under the microscope of one family)
- Won’t You Be My Neighbor? (Cried the whole time)
Television:
Didn’t watch that much TV, BUT:
- I fell in love with Fleabag
- I also really enjoyed Chewing Gum
- Derry Girls was a gift
Books
Also didn’t have time to read very many books (working two side jobs, working full time, taking classes.... it’s exhausting) but I am currently reading The Essex Serpent on my own and am really enjoying it. My boyfriend and I are also making a point to read together each night before bed rather than being on electronic devices, so I currently read Pride and Prejudice out loud at bedtime.
Music
I’m embarrassingly obsessed with holiday-specific music, so I listened to Kim Petras’s EDM Halloween album WAY too much
Of course Wasteland, Baby! was a favorite
Also really enjoyed Ximena Sariñana’s album, “¿Dónde Bailarán las Niñas?”
Podcasts
I work in the analysis of biological and chemical data, so a lot of time in front of a computer with headphones in. Podcasts make it more fun. The best ones I listened to this year:
- Crime Junkies
- What Next?
- Criminal
- Unladylike
- The Mortified Podcast
- Hysteria
- Bad with Money with Gaby Dunn
- America Dissected
- Bear Brook
- Dr. Death
Interesting Articles:
How to turn the tone of a conversation
An absolutely terrifying read
An article that helped me be more gentle with myself
The ability of cells to adapt and survive amazes and scares me
Our new economic reality
This oasis
A heartbreaking reflection on the shortness of life and gun violence
If you’re interested in the psychology of cults
Ecology, disease, and environment influencing history is my jam
A sadly underreported story this year
My goals for next year:
- Exercise more often
- Learn how to knit and sew my own clothing
- Improve my Hindi and Spanish skills
- Visit 12 state parks in my state
- Produce only one bag of trash per month!
Thanks for the friendship, support, kindness, fic comments... here’s to a great 2020!!!

New Decade’s Resolutions 🥳
2019,
what bloody chaos you were. In a way you weren't ever easy on me and in another you just rolled by with ease.
I got to check so much off my bucket list.
My first time on a plane: I've never seen anything quite comparable to the lights of cities below me at night and those butterflies in my stomach
A country I've never been to: Clocks ran different there and miss my the feeling of home with her
My first tattoo: it's such an integral part of me already and oh god I won't forget that moment when my pants came off and he stopped rushing to run his fingers across it and just grin like a child who had found out a secret
My first day of uni: i didn't think I would make it to there but I'm so endlessly happy that I did. I finally know what for
Kissing a childhood crush: Somewhere twelve year old me is still gushing over him and baby we did it even if it was just drunk fun but you know now
Try new music: got so close to that sober high techno can do to you. fell hopelessly in love at a concert with a kid whose music I heard for the first time. found out that if i don't feel like I belong, the black hearts club has a place for me
There's so much more I can't think of right now. There was so much love this year and so much hurt. So much tears and so much laughter. So many new people, a few old ones coming back and some I lost touch with.
I heard "you surprise me so much" a lot this year. Even from people that have known me a long time. Sometimes I feel like I surprise myself too but that's not really true. I'm still very much me. This is still very much who I always was in so many ways but I just never loved myself enough to let that out. So that's the biggest point off my list this year:
Falling in love with myself: even though it's not an easy love it's never hate anymore
New Year, New Decade.
Welcome to 2020 everybody! We made it through another decade of crazy shit and good times. I'm proud of you and everything you've done the last ten years, you've accomplished so much. Now lets all learn how to get along and stop the hate already so the next ten can be even better. Here's to getting to the 20's and leaving the 10's behind. Happy New Year I love you all!
2020 please don’t fail me!
