IT’S NEW YEAR’S EVE!!!

I almost can’t believe it!

It’s the last day of the year and it’s 20C° outside. That’s just weird! The kids enjoyed playing outside while my cousin, her husband and I prepared dinner all afternoon.

Then it was time to hit the shower and put on our best clothes. Little before 6pm, I started a video chat with my mom. I could count down with my family in Belgium and see how they went out on the street to watch the fireworks and drink some more cava with neighbours. When we ended our call, it made me a little bit sad, missing my mom, my family, my home.

Once I got downstairs and started my own New Year’s Eve, the feeling disappeared pretty fast. The children read their new year’s letters (me too), we had a delicious meal, presents were exchanged and around 11pm we got in the car and drove to a town next to Vienna, Unadilla.

There was a small event going on. Earlier that night, there was a BBQ competition (one of the guests stayed at my aunt’s B&B). There was live music. Live wood-carving. And right before midnight, the Chief Williams, chief of police, got in some sort of hoisting crane for the “hog drop”. Instead of New York’s Ball Drop, country side Georgia counted down with the “hog drop”.

Happy 2019!!

A 5-minute fireworks show to make it official and only a minute later everyone was headed home again. No afterparty. With 18C°, a little bit rain and my own family, I got in the New Year. An extraordinary experience, that’s for sure.
