Former Blue Grass Boy Byron Berline Dead at 77

Fiddler Byron Berline has died.

Berline, who was 77, died July 10 “from recent medical issues,” according to the Walnut Valley Festival, where the fiddler had played 35 times.

“Everyone at Walnut Valley sends prayers and thoughts to the Byron Berline family,” said a statement on the festival Facebook page.

Tommy Emmanuel said Berline was “a giant among us,” and that feeling led the guitarist to write “Tall Fiddler” in his honor.

“He was sincere, sensitive, funny and humbly walked this earth and inspired all of us out here,” Emmanuel wrote on social media. “His dedication to spreading good music to the masses was powerful and a great example to follow.”

Berline joined Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in 1967 and went on to play with the Dillards, Bob Dylan, Elton John, the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Rolling Stones, Sam Bush and Tim O’Brien among others.

“There was no finer fiddler,” O’Brien said on Facebook. “If Byron was around, you knew things would work out and the music would be good.”

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s John McEuen eulogized Berline as a “friend to many and fiddler ex·tra·or·di·naire,” in a Facebook post.

“We will miss him and his music,” McEuen wrote. “He left behind a lot of great recordings and was incredible.”

9 comments “ As I write this, I am sad twice more over the loss suffered by banjo master Randal Morton in a mysterious fire this past weekend. Mysterious? Not really. Molotov cocktail to the residence next door, and it also burned Randal's home.

Randal did rescue the banjos. I hope he got them all! His hand was injured but he and Henrietta escaped with the dog and their lives.
