Points scored for to-the-point-ness, Mark Turner Meets Gary Foster makes the inclusion of artist credits in a review lede instantaneously redundant. It also whets ears in expectation of some serious saxophone steeplechasing. In the company of bassist Putter Smith and drummer Joe LaBarbera the tenorist and altoist, respectively, hold welcome loquacious court in front of a small club audience. The quartet essays seven tunes, four of which are familiar contrafacts born of the Tristano School songbook, in what amounts to two concert sets and just short of ninety-minutes of music.

Foster’s ties to Tristano were through pianist’s two most famous students, Warne Marsh and Leo Konitz. He studied and collaborated with both, honing a vernacular on his horn similar, but distinct from the latter and breaking austerity ranks with the former to embrace more commercial contexts. Turner and Marsh’s paths regrettably didn’t cross directly (he was an undergrad when Marsh died on-stage, mid-solo, in 1987), but he remained an indelible influence on his sound and opportunities to play with Konitz came later. Those stylistic roots are in full view across the performance. 

Marsh’s “Background Music,” built on the chord changes to “All of Me,” is at once bracing and eloquent in its evocation of the composer’s jousts of old with confrere Konitz. Turner peels off after a helixical gravity-negating theme statement, surfing a bobbing rhythm by Smith and La Barbera and leaving a foamy trail of elliptical choruses in his wake before handing off to Foster who shapes his solo in a more straightforward fashion. Such differences in phrasing and tone manifest with refreshing regularity, making the players easy to differentiate when their overlap in register. 

Another boon of the extended renditions arrives in the various opportunities to hear Smith and LaBarbera solo at length. Both men are veterans as well having been reliable session players for a half-century and the drummer even holding down regular posts with Bill Evans and Tony Bennett. While not as jaw-unhinging as the co-leaders, their work independently and in tandem is arguably just as colorful as during the porous, elastically spun dialogue that develops in the opening minutes of the band’s investigation of the late altoist Sonny Red’s slow blues “Teef.”

A quarter-hour version of Konitz’s “Subconscious-Lee”, another contrafact this time hung on the changes of “What Is This Thing Called Love?” (and a pioneering example in the composer’s lifelong preference for first name puns), closes the engagement brings the individualism inherent of each player out in boldest relief. Turner opens, blowing curled tones in a progression that mimics the stair-stepping elegance of Monk’s “Misterioso.” Smith follows, strumming rich stops; then LaBarbera, trafficking only in muted cymbal washes and splashes, and finally Foster, shaping floating, madrigal-like phrases. After such extended intimacy, the requisite full band portion of the piece almost feels anti-climactic.
