- Aria is getting ready to go to school and Byron tells her that that night too she and Mike are going to be alone at dinner and Mike wants to order from a certain place that Aria’s not so fond of. When Aria asks him if he’s sure he’s not going to be there Byron says he has something with the department at the university, but he doesn’t sound sure. Aria needs his pledge for the dance marathon and Byron tells her to get his checkbook in his jacket. Aria looks there and finds a ticket for the exhibition she went to with Ezra. She asks Byron explanations and he says the ticket is her mum’s, her car broke down and she borrowed his. He thinks she went there and tells her to talk to Ella about that.
- Spencer is in Emily’s room and she observes the Cavanaughs mailbox out of the window. They talk about Toby: Spencer starts to think that he’s being framed too. After she met the bracelets lady who had her name n the receipts she started giving Toby the benefit of the doubt, as she knows how it is to be accused of something you didn’t do. Spencer apologizes to Emily, because she believed he was innocent from day 1, while Spencer said some very mean things about him. Emily tells her to apologize to Toby.
- Aria and Hannah meet at school. Hannah tells Aria that the vending machines are all broken and apparently there’s a guy who has been found at school when the school was closed. Aria is freaking out about the ticket she found in her dad’s jacket and she tells Hannah. She wonders whether her parents were both at the museum and what does it mean. Hannah minimize and says it’s just a coincidence, but Aria doesn’t believe it.
- Hannah sees Caleb and goes talk to him, asking Aria to get her coffee. She then tells Caleb that he can’t tell anybody what he did with Mrs Montgomery’s car and he says that he’s fine with it, but she owes him a favor. After Caleb leaves, Hannah receives a text: “Caleb’s quiet, but how R U gonna shut ME up? –A”. Hannah looks around herself and there’s plenty of people who are using their phones at the moment.
- Opening credits.
- Emily is at swim practice. In the changing rooms the coach tells Emily and Paige that they perfectly tied their times, so they’ll have to decide tomorrow who’s team captain. After the coach leaves, Paige tells Emily that she has to figure it out, cause she needs to win.
- Aria meets her mum in the corridors. Ella says that she was just talking to the principal about Ezra and her class, about a play that Ezra wanted to take the class too. Aria asks her explanation about the ticket and the car, and Ella admits that she skipped the theatre and went to a very nice dinner with a friend instead.
- Spencer, Hannah and Emily are at the library. Caleb arrives and Hannah goes to talk to him. He decided what he wants in exchange of the favor he did to her: he wants to go out with her and that she introduces him to potential new clients for his technology things with a lot of money. Caleb thinks that if they see him with her they will think he’s trustworthy. He asks her what is she doing tomorrow night and she says she is cheering on Emily at a swimming event.
- Spencer asks Emily about her match with Paige the following day and encourages her, telling her that it is ok to be ambitious and fight for something. Then Spencer sees a form for who wants to be a peer tutor in French 3 for a home schooled student and realizes it’s Toby. She takes a note with the number. Emily tells Spencer not to do it, because she would be applying for the wrong reason, but Spencer is determined and thinks talking to Toby could be very useful to understand who’s framing them.
- Ian is in the coaches room and Spencer goes to tell him that she can’t come to practice that afternoon because she has another commitment. Ian tells her to come inside and close the door. Ian asks her why is she avoiding him, but Spencer answers she’s just concentrating on other things beside athletics. Melissa arrives and Spencer takes the occasion to leave. Ian tells Melissa that her sister is leaving the team, to which Spencer answers that she’s not leaving the team, she’s just doing some tutoring. When they ask if she’s tutoring anybody in particular, she says it’s Toby, to see if they have any kind of reaction. Both Melissa and Ian seem shocked and ask her what is this really about, but Spencer leaves.
- Later, Spencer arrives at the Cavanaughs’ house and knocks on the door. Toby opens her and Spencer tells him she’s his tutor. He opens the door completely and asks her why. Spencer says she volunteered and already prepared a schedule for his work. Toby goes out of the house, saying that Jenna is in and Spencer can’t come inside. Since he can’t go anywhere else, they sit on the porch.
- Hannah is in Aria’s room. Aria is still freaking out about the ticket and her parents, and Hannah is still trying to minimize. Aria hears Byron talking in the phone and listens to what he says. He’s telling someone that he’ll meet them in the dark, as he’s done before. When Aria asks him if he’s seeing her mum he denies, but we know it’s true. After Byron leaves Aria decides to follow him, even if Hannah is reluctant.
- Spencer and Toby are sitting on the porch and she gives him a book: it’s the French version of Catcher in the rye, a book that he’s already read in English. When he asks how does she know that he read that book, she says she saw him reading it at the bar once. Toby asks Spencer what she really want, because he thinks Spencer doesn’t do anything without a reason. She answers that she thinks he is being framed and when he asks what changed her mind she says that somebody might be doing the same to her. Spencer notices somebody inside the house. Toby asks her why would somebody go after her, which Spencer doesn’t know. She apologizes for what she said and thought about him and then asks him about the sweater he gave to Ali the night she disappeared. He says he got in a car with some guy, he doesn’t know who. Spencer asks him if he knows how it might have gotten back to his house, but, after they hear another noise from inside, Toby says he has to go and thanks her for the book.
- Emily is home, studying in her room with Spencer. Spencer says he’s different than she thought he would be. Spencer is helping Emily with her homework and she’s keeping thinking about Toby. She’s very puzzled and Emily is surprised to see a Hastings without answers.
- In the dark, Byron is walking inside high school and Aria and Hannah are in the car, following him. Hannah suggests that Aria calls her mum. Ella picks up and Aria asks where is she. Ella turns the question to her, and in that moment Byron joins her and hugs her. Aria says she’s home. Ella says bye. Hannah asks Aria if she believes her mum and she says she doesn’t know. Aria and Hannah get inside school. Ella and Byron are making out and the girls see them. Byron says they should tell the kids, but Ella says they have to figure out what that is first. Then they leave.
- Hannah notices something in the air duct and, curious, goes to check it out. Inside the air duct there’s a sweater and a bag with some phones in it. Aria arrives and Hannah shows her what she found. Hannah thinks that that stuff belongs to A, and Aria suggests they get out of there. Hannah takes the handful of money that was there and follows Aria. The girls hear a noise and the lights go down. Somebody appear in the dark and the girls, scared, run away. This person follow them and, after Hannah sprays him in the eye with hair spray, they see it’s Caleb. They help him with his eye and ask him what he’s doing there. He says he’s crashing there and asks Hannah her money back. Aria and Hannah ask him why is he staying there and he says his foster parents don’t care about him, as long as they have their check, and he finds it comfortable there. Hannah says the school knows someone was there the night before and gives him his money back. Caleb leaves and the girls, worried, too.
- Emily is in bed and she receives a text. She goes to open the door and Paige is there. It’s raining and Paige is completely wet and crying. When Emily asks her what’s wrong Paige says she’s sorry and if she was Emily she would hate her; she hates herself already. Emily says she doesn’t hate her, and Paige leaves, saying that she just wanted to let her know that.
- The morning after Emily is in the changing rooms with all the swimmer girls and the coach tells her that she doesn’t have to do the swim off, because she was told that Paige had an accident the night before riding her bike.
- Hannah meets Caleb at school for the swim event. She asks him what he’s doing and what’s his plan. Caleb says they have their date and she owes him a favor, to which Hannah replies that she wants an answer for each person she introduces him to. Hannah introduces him to a girl and asks him where he’s from. He says Seattle, Salt Lake, Denver, Chicago, and here. Hannah introduces him to another girl and asks her about his foster parents. He says he had four in the last six months and they don’t even know his name. Hannah asks him when was the last time he saw his real parents and Caleb answers that it’s going to take a lot more than money to hear about that.
- Spencer sees Ian and Melissa arrives. She asks Spencer what’s wrong between her and Ian. Melissa thinks that Ian is just being nice and Spencer is being mean at him for no reason. Spencer says that Ian’s rushing back with her is suspicious and he’s not being entirely honest with her. Melissa replies she was the one who proposed to him. Spencer says Melissa should ask him about Ali and what happened the summer she disappeared. Melissa thinks Spencer is really exaggerating and asks her if it was Toby who put that idea in her mind. She tells Spencer that she already ruined one of her relationships and she won’t allow her to ruin her marriage too. Ian brings them hotdogs and Melissa leaves with him.
- The swimmers start to swim. Spencer, Aria , Hannah and Caleb are watching. Caleb goes to talk to one of the girls Hannah indicated him.
- Emily didn’t start swimming yet. She notices that Paige arrives. It’s Em’s turn and she jumps in the water. She swims very well and wins the competition. Paige is cheering on her too, as her friends.
- Spencer sees Ian and Melissa again, and tells Aria she’ll walk home.
- Aria receives a text: “Almost got you busted. Wanna know how? Ask Hanna! –A”.
- Hannah sees Caleb taking his things out of the garbage. She offers him a place to stay, but he refuses, saying that if her mum starts asking questions then they call the social services and it becomes a big mess. Hannah gives him her address, saying that there’s a couch in her basement and her mum would never know. They smile at each other and Caleb leaves.
- Aria reaches Hannah and shows her A’s message. Hannah confesses that she gave Ella the museum ticket, because A has something on her and made her do it. Aria is upset and tells Hannah that if it was the opposite she would never had done that to her. Hannah tries to explain, but Aria is really mad and leaves.
- Emily sees Paige and asks her if she’s ok. Paige hasn’t been answering her calls and tells Emily that it was because she didn’t know what to say. The night before she wiped out, and when Emily asks her what was she thinking about, she answers that she was thinking how easy things would be if she wiped out. She wants to quit swimming. Emily says that she knows what it’s like when you have to much pressure on and she moved past that when she started swimming for herself, without worrying about being better than everybody else. She invites Paige to swim just for fun. They swim together.
- Spencer arrives at the Cavanaughs and sees Jenna’s glasses and coffee on the porch table. Toby comes out of the house and tells her that they can’t study together anymore. Spencer says she thought they could help each other, but Toby insists that they can’t and gives her back her book.
- Aria is in her room, writing on her diary. Hannah calls her, but she doesn’t take it.
- Hannah is at her home, looking at her phone while sitting on the staircase. She’s quietly crying. Caleb is there and asking her questions about what he can use in the bathroom. He notices that she’s crying and asks her what’s going on. She tells him that Aria is really really mad at him, because of the thing she told him not to say. She says he doesn’t have to sit there and listen to her, he can go take his shower. Caleb says it can wait and sits with her.
- Spencer arrives home and tells Melissa good night. Melissa tries to talk to her. She tells him hat she knows about her and Ian: he told her everything. Spencer insists that Ian is dangerous, but Melissa replies that she has a problem, because she keeps wanting what’s hers. Melissa goes on saying that she doesn’t want to fight. She tells Spencer that she’s pregnant, apparently expecting congratulations from Spencer, who just shuts up.
- Melissa leaves and Spencer finds a note Toby left her inside the book. He wrote her hat he found something written in Braille in Jenna’s room.
- Final scene: Someone’s listening to a CD of French lessons. We see something that we’ll understand from the next episodes is a trophy.
