Mila had been texting back and forth with her older brother about seeing the babies, and while the brunette had a packed schedule with dress rehearsals leading up to the opening of her newest show, she had made sure to set aside her entire day off to go visit. Armed with a paper tray carrying three coffees, she made her way to LUX, dropping the first of the drinks off to Elias in his office before taking the lift up to the penthouse. She balanced the drink tray in one hand and knocked on the door with the other. “Casey!” Mila shouted from the hallway, letting herself in. “I come armed with coffee and the need to snuggle babies!”

Tatum rarely found herself with an entire day off; often she’d volunteer to be on call for at least a portion of the day. Instead she’d decided to leave work at work and check in on Casey, considering she’d been pulled into a last-minute surgery and had to miss the wedding they’d both been invited to over the weekend. The doctor popped into Elias’ office to greet him before heading up to the penthouse, firmly holding onto Mady’s hand, who had insisted on coming to see her cousins. Knocking twice on the door, Tatum turned her attention to the four-year-old. “Now, we’re going to use our inside voice, right? The babies could be sleeping..” She trailed off, turning back towards the door as it opened.

     The plastic wrapper of the snack cake package crinkled as she opened it. There was no way to be quiet when opening those things. It drew some attention from people loitering outside the store--at least, Casey was sure it did--and without looking up she muttered, “Oh, just fuck off.”

“Where’re you from?” By the woman’s accent, it was obvious she wasn’t from around here. Probably from somewhere in Europe, but she had no real idea. She wasn’t an expert on accents or geography. She gestured at the woman’s camera. No pictures. Casey didn’t want it waved in her face.

It was a college town. Casey didn’t have anything against college towns. She was still a few years off from being mistaken for a student, but it was easier for her to blend in here than in other places. Most people didn’t give her a second glance. She was glad for that.

The bus schedule was wrinkled, but she smoothed it out and peered at the times. There wouldn’t be another one for a while, so she was on her own for at least an hour. Time to explore.

She shoved the dingy paper into the open zipper of her ratty backpack and pulled it up over her shoulder, liberating strands of blonde hair before they snagged. With a critical eye, Casey searched her surroundings. There was a store, nearby, but too close. She only had enough money for the bus, and stealing food from somewhere so close was risky, especially if someone noticed her.

Shoving her hands into her pockets, the teenager started to walk, head tucked down but aware at all times of what was going on around her. She’d find another place to steal something to eat. It was just a matter of being patient.

Her head hurt too much to be embarrassed at the situation. She was better than this, better than just some person who could get jumped and knocked out. Casey was only happy to let him think she’d been in an actual fight rather than ambushed. “I dunno.” She tried to think. It probably wasn’t long, considering it wasn’t much darker than earlier. “I don’t think more than an hour. Shit, I don’t know.”

“I need ice. And for you to talk just a little bit quieter, dude.”

The Roadhouse hadn’t changed much. The last time Casey was here, she’d been much younger. There was something comforting in how familiar everything was--like nothing had changed at all.

She wished that was true.

She hitched her bag up higher on her shoulder, her gaze fully adjusted now to the dim light. It seemed empty, but it was mid-morning. Maybe the bar wasn’t even open yet, despite the unlocked door.

“ ‘Lo?” she called, her fingers flexing on the strap at her shoulder.

It wasn’t really too hard to track Emma down. Even after nearly two years, and people drifting apart and life happening, she never forgot Emma. Always wanted to look her up, never feeling like she should intrude on the woman’s life.

But here she was, standing outside her home, and unsure whether or not she should go forward and knock, or ring the bell or something.

She might not even remember her.

Casey sighed and pulled her bag on her shoulder. Maybe it was a bad idea.
