C-Bass Project

The C-Bass project is a four-year bass research programme led by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas). This study – due to be completed in March 2017 – aims to help address key data gaps in several different areas of bass biology. One of them being collecting data on bass movements through fish tagging.

In order to better protect bass stocks, it is key to learn about their behaviour and migration patterns. Thus Cefas scientists are releasing bass tagged with electronic data storage tags (DSTs). These tags record the pressure (depth) and temperature experienced by the fish in the sea every two minutes. The DST is internally implanted in the body cavity of the fish. Each DST is encased in a bright orange ‘floatation jacket’, which allows the tag to float to shore once released from the fish – even when the fish haven’t been captured.

The longer a tag remains on a fish before being returned, the more valuable it is: it has captured more data describing the daily movement and activity patterns of bass and how the fish behave in relation to temperature, tides and depth. So far the returned tags show some remarkable results. One Weymouth tagged bass had a 300 day track record. The data show that it swam west following release on 4 November 2014, out into the Western Approaches. Then it spent January to March in the Celtic Sea. During April to June it swam south, approaching the North coast of Brittany before returning to the Channel. The fish continued on an eastward bearing before it was captured by a UK Otter Trawler in the Eastern Channel on 30 August 2015.

The longest track so far is a 383-day record from another one of the Weymouth tagged bass. This one too displayed patterns of movement that were greater than Cefas scientists had previously imagined. The data show that this fish also swam west following its release on 4 November 2014, out into the Western Approaches. But from February onwards it headed back east and made steady progress up through the Channel, entering the North Sea in early June. At the end of September, the fish abruptly turned northwest and flanked Dogger Bank. The tagged bass then headed south again, and was caught in nets on November 21 2015, off Dungeness (196km from release).

Sea anglers can help to provide more data on bass movements by returning DSTs. You can recognise DST-tagged bass from supplementary identification tags attached either from the dorsal fin or a spaghetti tag trailing below the anal fin. Additionally, the fish may also have a tattoo on the belly. Then it’s a bass tagged by Ifremer. This French laboratory runs the parallel bass research programme called BARGIP and is a Cefas partner. So if you catch a tagged sea bass, take a note of where and when the fish was captured and keep the whole fish with its tags in the freezer or on ice. Contact Cefas next to collect the 100 euro reward for returning the DST-tag and the fish. Also keep an eye out on the strandline when you a™re walking the dog, as tags all have a bright orange flotation jacket and sometimes wash up on the beach.
