You took the words right outta my mouth! Had to come to tumblr's hot TV show reviewer for some insight. From the last time I messaged you I thought I'd ask you again :) I really enjoyed Humans, especially the first 6 episodes, thought the last 2 coulda been a bit more explosive. I did enjoy waiting for Mia to breakout of Anita in the house, added confusion & paranoia. On race, it looked like some sort of weird role reversal to watch a black guy talk against their presence in society...
(cont’d) as for synths role in society, I could see the extreme pros & cons of having them mass populate culture. So you thought there was a lack of background on the main characters & stale writing?---Oh my god you are the sweetest little cherry pie where are you I need to come and cuddle you immediately!!I'm working off the top of my head here so excuse me in advance if I'm a tiny bit vague.. I really hate stale dialogue so there’s a part in one of the earlier episodes where Niska says something like “Sister? Ha, a human word” to characterise her as wanting to disassociate from humans. Too blatant, and her actions throughout the series characterise her way better - I feel like her nailgunning all of the syths at the smash club says way more about her. Also, I am 100000% done with the rape makes female characters stronger trope. Niska’s story is well thought out I suppose; Elster mistreats her in some way by “not always treating her like a child” > Syths flee after Elster’s death > Leo leaves her in a brothel betraying her in the same way > Niska snaps. It’s a well built storyline but I’m still not down for it. However, Anita’s horrible encounter and Matty’s intervention with the synth rape at the house party actually made my skin crawl and even DS Drummond’s wife and her interaction with the syth (although a bit shallow) were more interesting and relevant avenues to explore where consent is concerned. Mia’s interaction in particular was so horrible because we know she’s alive and trapped inside that body and she is not being treated like a living being, we also feel betrayed by a character we trusted and liked - whereas I feel like we’re quite desensitised to people being cruel to prostitutes which is awful and horrible but that’s what tv has done. Can you see I’m having a lot of conflicting feelings about this can you tell???I also feel like there were plenty of times where the dialogue was just exposition? I’ll have to watch it again to find the right examples but I seem to remember the phrase “I know you’re feeling like (feeling) because of (event)” and that kind of little wink-nudge hey audience are you keeping up with us here drives me MAD. I wrote a review about Amy the documentary recently where I was like NO STOP BELITTLING YOUR AUDIENCE WE AINT DUMB!! It drives me mad.I hate the way the series touches on what value humans have now that labour has been taken up by synths and I say hate because I’m so interested in that concept and want so much more of it than I got. It’s such a western idea that our value as humans is partly decided by our labour and the series just SKIMS GENTLY ON THE SURFACE OF THIS like a feather gently bobbing across the ocean while I’m sat here like NO touch it more grope it grab it hard. We live in an age on the precipice of jobs being lost because don’t need people to do them any more; office jobs and basic admin, finances and stuff are theoretically on their way out. Someone I know works in finance and its his idea that within the next 10-20 years lawyers are on their way out, like that’s so interesting!! The scenes of WAP protests are scary for me as an immigrant because I am very scared of the BNP and other such parties and their big “when in doubt keep ‘em out” type protests. The choice of a black actor and an white elderly female actress to lead two of these protests were interesting because these are two groups that are classically discriminated against - are people more unified in this world where it’s just people vs not people or is racism still a thing?A bit more on race and then I’ll shut up for now because I’ve written such an essay... The scene with Fred where he could no longer harm Hobb was shocking when we think about issues of race. Hobb is a white scientist in a position of power and Fred is a black synth - do we all remember the last time black people had their free will taken away from them? It was pretty recent! What are they trying to SAY about issues of race with this scene, but also what are they trying to say at all with this story? I feel like I’ve missed the point of that particular scientific advancement there other than baseless cruelty. Fred is dependable, strong and frequently underestimated and in the end he still gets taken and reprogrammed for the use of this white guy, powerful, relevant stuff that’s not really made anything of - but maybe in the next series.OK ONE MORE THING DI Voss’ story??? What???????????????Thank you again for the ask precious angel I hope you can be bothered to read my ramble. 3
