takes place way before these two are dating
Rubbing her eyes tiredly, Cassandra stepped out of her car, stuffing the keys in her jacket pocket. Six thirty was far too early, but at least there was Starbucks.
A welcome rush of warm air hit Cassandra as she opened the door to the shop, followed closely by the rich smell of coffee. It wasn't often that she stooped quite this low, but she had to stay awake through two more study groups, an exam, and rugby practice; she had little choice. Stepping up to the counter, she searched the menu, not familiar with any of the various cappuccinos or lattes.
A short girl with a wide grin and curly hair that was falling out of a loose bun greeted her, her smile far too bright for this early in the morning. "What can I get for you?"
Letting out a low sigh, Cassandra ventured, "Do you still have the... the pumpkin thing?"
"Ooh, sorry," the girl apologized, tapping a colorful display on the counter, "you're a day late. We've got peppermint mochas now. They're not pumpkin spice, but they're pretty good."
Cassandra made a face. She'd been skeptical about the pumpkin and coffee mixture, and peppermint and coffee didn't sound appealing, either. Then again, she'd been wrong about the pumpkin. "Umm..." She searched the menu again. "I'll take a vanilla latte, then."
The girl behind the counter grabbed a cup and a marker. "And your name?"
She scribbled down the name on the cup, and as she began making the latte, asked, "You go to school here?"
Cassandra nodded. "Just started this August. You?"
"Um, no." She looked away. "Well, I... I go to school up the road. I'm a senior in high school."
There was a moment of silence between the two, the only sound coming from the quiet music and the distant highway traffic. The girl behind the counter broke it with a short, "Your latte is done."
Grabbing the coffee, Cassandra headed back outside. She took a sip, and immediately regretted her choice.
Next time, she would take the cute girl's suggestion and get the peppermint.
