what she means: if Deb is a ‘hardcore stoner’, why is the only line we ever hear her say ‘then maybe we’re out’ in reference to smoking weed? is she simply being protective of Alice’s clear discomfort and efforts not to get involved with these kids, putting her own love for weed aside to protect her girlfriend? contrary to this, however, Alice seems to be interested in Deb mostly because she’s rebellious and is, in fact, a stoner. she shows no resistance to Deb’s stoner tendencies and even brags about the rebelliousness of the relationship. is she only attracted to the idea of doing drugs in the context of her girlfriend? does she just think bad girls are hot? she is afraid of being pressured to do drugs by other teens but Deb discourages her from smoking and discourages the other teens from pressuring her. is it this protection from actually having to do drugs while still being able to have the bad girl image the reason she is with Deb? is she taking advantage of Deb’s insístance on keeping her safe to appear rebellious? Deb seems to be a very good girlfriend, but all of the description we get of her from other characters is as a stoner and kind of a bad kid. why is the only direct characterization we see of her a kind and nurturing action toward Alice? is this Deb’s true character? are we supposed to view Bill as an unreliable narrator who simply fears his daughter growing up? is Alice’s apotheosis lying about Deb’s drug habits to manipulate Bill into feeling guilty and like he’s lost control? is this initial scene between her, Alice, and the stoner kids meant to mislead us regarding Deb’s character and create more of a shock later on? is it to establish Deb as the one who will protect Alice over her father, causing her to flee to her for safety during the attack? is her dependence on Deb meant to be viewed as her downfall? or as a tragic loss of young love?
