My view out my living room window, when working on the couch (where I predominantly work) is this: the uppermost tips of a bush called Pieris Japonica, or Mountain Fire. For months now, since early Spring, my attention has been disrupted many times a day by the sudden darting into my peripheral vision of a white butterfly, who, for a few seconds each time, flutters and swoops in zig-zagging loops over the tips of the bush, very much like a kite or a modern ballet. I must have watched this magnificent dance hundreds of times now, but it never fails to startle and captivate me. I have searched rather exhaustively online to try and discern the relationship of this butterfly species to this shrub species. I thought surely someone else must have observed, delighted in, and documented this butterfly's obsessive dance with this particular bush. But I find nothing, neither in scholarly databases nor more generalized lepidoptera sites. I thought, perhaps it is not a relationship of this species of butterfly to this species of bush, but is an idiosyncratic preference of this one individual white butterfly. But it is a cabbage butterfly, and their life cycles are only 3 weeks, where I have been observing this daily dance outside my window since March or early April. Why does the cabbage butterfly dance over the Mountain Fire all day? Especially when I've read that cabbage butterflies typically stay close to the brassica plants they feed on, and I have no brassicas in my yard at all. It appears to be a mystery I'll never solve, and I will have to simply enjoy, without understanding it, the magic— of which I do believe a sliver is embedded in this relationship; I learned the Latin name of the cabbage butterfly is also, unaccountably, Pieris.
