have you read charred by cadesama on ao3? i'm not a zucest shipper but this one is amazing, it's so dark and it really breaks my heart

I did read it and I liked it, It was a long while ago though, it was a nice one shot indeed, I miss the times where fics like that would pop up reguarly.

I mean, leaving aside that the movies are now dubbed the Skywalker saga, literally every Luke-Rey scene would have been improved by her being his daughter. That would carry through to the third movie and how the audience is allowed to experience Rey.

I maintain that everything went wrong when JJ left the first film on a cliffhanger. Star Wars doesn’t do cliffhangers, really--they at least have emotional resolution. If the end had just been thirty seconds longer and she’d said “Father” or hugged Luke and we’d clearly established she was Rey Effing Skywalker then we would have had emotional resolution on the big question posed by TFA - “Who is this girl?” and we could have moved onto developing her as her own character.

As it was, the filmmakers couldn’t decide who she was so they reinvented her backstory LITERALLY EVERY EFFING MOVIE.

Huh, interesting idea, though idk how that would work.

Though admittedly Shmi’s death was a major step on Anakin’s path to darkness and why Owen didn’t trust Obi-Wan, but that’s more focused on the Jedi.

What gets my goat is that this is always glossed over or ignored in fanfics, which is exactly where you’d expect some fan to maybe realize that. (Actually it brings up something I want to do in Sandswept if I ever get to it...)

I think fandom is frequently guilty of this dichotomy as well. Female characters are flawless, while male characters (if embraced) are loved for their flaws, emotions, and mistakes.

Funny enough, it was reading fic from an otherwise excellent author where they decided to make the mother of a character, on whom there’s 0 canon information, a wonderful supportive perfect woman in contrast to the character’s sucky dad, that inspired this post.

It’s honestly ridiculous how much the Madonna/Whore complex applies, even if transformed, in fandom. Sympathetic female villains are always given redemption stories or made to be on the side of the good guys eventually, even if the rough male equivalent stays on the villain side. Padme is a virtuous saint, a badass who really Could Have Done Better, or she’s the horrible temptation that destroyed Anakin and was Such a Bitch.

This even applies to the scale of badass/not badass.

The Holdo stuff makes me so furious because it is ripped from screenwriting 101 (set up character in opposition to authority fig), but insulting and badly done to the point where Rebellion/Resistance leadership is now consistently portrayed as the worst thing happening to the Resistance.

And it can’t even stick with who’s right or not, with the narrative going one way but the actual actions another. Poe’s demoted for going through with a plan that Leia had actually signed off on, and was necessary to complete for the Resistance to escape (which, why was the Resistance so tiny this ep, they had avoided being destroyed last ep). But the time Poe actually is wrong, (the mutiny), he gets a slap on his wrist at most when he should be court marshaled at minimum. But again, all of this could have been avoided if Holdo had actually told enough ranking officers under her that she a) had a plan and b) what it entailed. 

Ugh, why do they make Rebel leadership swallow the idiot ball for Plot. They could have done it so much better.

It’s just altogether meaningless. What is the distinction between the two that’s being drawn here--motive? It’s better to have something you’re defending in the fight, rather than mindlessly lashing out at things that...hurt you? Except in the context of the movie that distinction makes no sense because Finn was about to sacrifice his own life, the greatest act of life an individual can make, for the lives of his friends.

I’m probably annoyed by it because I believe in the metaphysical reality of evil, and we should hate what is evil, therefore we should fight what we hate. Regardless if we have any personal stake in the game.

holy shit, what an asshole. You handled that with grace and I respect your willingness to confront the errors in someone's evidence for their thesis, even though you support the thesis as a whole. Exactly what tumblr discourse needs more of.
