Just finished The shadow of what was lost and it was goooooooddddddd lord. After reading twotm its definitely easy to pinpoint how exactly its Islingtons debut — by the way some things are executed, the pace, the characters and the relationships between them (especially the romantic ones). BUT it doesnt take away his skill — nor the greatness of the plot overall —, i dont think.
I expected the ending. No spoilers but from the middle of the book I just went ´yeah. thats what well learn by the end’ and it was indeed the plot twist,, i guess reading dozens of fantasy series does that to you lol
Some things I greatly enjoyed: (with spoilers)
Caeden. Best character. Nothing else.
Wirr and Davians friendship ("I’m going with you.")
The Augur team (although weve barely seen fessi). Really liked their powers and Kol was cool as hell. Their visions about their own deaths? Asha being the only one aware of it? Hell yeah
ERRAN AND ELOCIEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The control part was so unexpected (elociens violent nature and the fact that he planned on killing wirr?! WHAT THE FUCK)
Davians behaviour reflecting Malshash’s. Yes. Gimme ten of em rn
Aelrics backstory! Aelric! Aelric pining over Kara! Aelric and his one sided beef with wirr! I love aelric. Hes just a boy who knows how to wield a sword your honour.
Alaris and Caeden. Be gay do crimes and all that
stupid niche book meme
What if you gave your boybestie the only weapon that could ever kill you because you knew no matter what he would never hurt a friend. And then he proceeded to use it to kill everyone else in your friend group. But still you refused to believe he would use it on you until the sword’s in your chest and he’s holding you as your life slips away.
Realising I have a new type of fictional guy (silly/pathetic member of the friend group turns out to be an immortal being who is weighed down by the terrible things they've done and carries deep regrets and wants to change but isn't sure if they're capable of it after so long)
I was going to do a licanius as onion headlines post but every one I found was just Caeden. So have Caeden as onion headlines
Caeden's evil clone: *points at Caeden* Shoot him. He's the clone.
Davian: *shoots clone* The real Caeden would never pass up a chance to die
