TWD MARATHON REVIEW 37/?
S3E16: “Welcome to the Tombs”
Aired: March 31st, 2013
Reviewed: October 25th, 2020
Season finale y’all. Surprised it isn’t an extended episode.
Whose eye are we hella focused on??
Ew the Governor’s.
Who is he beating? Milton?? Because Andrea is in the metal room.
It is Milton :(((
So the governor is flat out telling what gets him turned on to Milton. Just the look on his face and the way he’s saying everything
Governor really blames himself for not being able to keep his daughter alive. Maybe that’s how he uses Martinez, by preying on his guilt for not being able to save his wife and kids.
Could y’all imagine Martinez as a father?? He was probably a great dad and husband. His kids had to be kid kids maybe under age 10. Him playing baseball with them, sitting in the bleachers for softball or baseball games cheering his kids on. He was a soft dad and you can’t tell me otherwise. Probably met his wife in his late teens early twenties and knew she was the one instantly and immediately wanted to marry her because she knocked him off his game. I’ll never not be mad we didn’t get to know more about him.
Milton is so worried about Andrea.
“I had to stretch the truth a little bit, just a little.” LITTLE???? you are VERY limber with those truths
Milton left Andrea something to get out of her restraints. Sweet boy.
Governor is an ass. “Strengthening” Milton by making him kill people isn’t how to do it. So that makes me wonder if he thought Merle was weak or just not at full potential. Governor realized that Merle would drop anything for his brother so he promised he’d help him look and offered him a purpose and all but in return made him a fight, gradually upping the risk and showing his true side to the point Merle started to fear him. I think Merle truly feared Governor because he had Merle kill 16 people for no reason and was aware of the true destruction he could cause. He forced Merle to be independent, allowing him to do whatever because he was a good fight, a great executioner, and he didn’t ask questions or cause mayhem because he knew he’d never see Daryl again if he did. This just makes me pissed at the governor but so proud of Merle for doing the right thing and buying Rick and Co time to stay alive.
Okay, back to it
Nooooooo. Milton why did you swing the knife?? You jab it, never swing. Swinging takes took much time and opens your body for attacks.
“You kill or you die. Or you die and you kill.”
Oh we’re finally getting to that Grimes picture frame four episodes later. Took you long enough
Wait are they picking up and prepping to leave???
The sheriff star. Carl still has it?? How has it not gotten lost??
Carl, why are you mad??
It’s gotta be fall or winter because everyone is wearing layers.
Everyone is concerned about Carl.
“He’s still a kid. It’s easy to forget.”
God damnit still seeing Lori.
Daryl’s poncho. I see it. And where does he keep getting these bolts other than the prop department?? He was just using green and white ones and now these are red and orange?
Daryl must’ve told the group about Merle’s sacrifice. Or at least told Carol.
Carol offered Daryl some help getting up and he took it.
Michonne’s cloak matching Rick’s shirt-jacket. I see you costume department.
Rick and Michonne talking about the deal and Rick apologizing and Michonne understanding. They’ve come a long way from that intense interrogation within like a week or two??
I like this soft music over this intro. Especially this scene of Michonne thanking Rick for taking her in and Rick saying it was Carl who made that choice. It’s so soft and an underrated moment.
And then the music stops and we cut to the Governor shouting at his army.
Tyreese and Sasha really said no to killing and yes to protecting children. Good to see Tyreese’s arc and demise were consistent and full circle to his morals. Sasha’s arc?? doesn’t really exist until Tyreese dies?? Like, hers isn’t as clear as her brothers or other supporting characters. They could’ve taken away from Andrea’s repeative scenes this season and given more to Sasha finding her place in Woodbury. Idk, something to tell us her purpose in S3 other than great scenes between her and her brother. I still miss these two to this day.
Governor is so dead when he says “thank you.”
They’re gonna get there and see they left. It’s gonna be by a few moments isn’t it??
A grenade launcher at the first watchtower. Wow. Okay. A 50 at the second one. So much noise for literally no point. Just killing concrete and glass, but you do you, killing crew
They’re literally just killing the walkers they sent in here days ago.
And a grenade to the third watchtower
It’s actually so loud I had to turn the volume down.
Oh wait, I see the grey hat kid Carl ends up killing. Noah I think is the kid. So Rick and Co are in the woods?? Planning an ambush or just waiting them out??
This army is not that good. All huddled behind the truck. All in the courtyard. No separation or splitting up. One rpg missile could do some damage to half the army. Their ground and ambush tactics bother me sooo much. How could you have this large of a group and be clustered so close in one spot. Have you heard of flanking??
They used a car to break down the door. You didn’t need to do that. I can assure you, they didn’t weld the door shut. So dramatic for no reason other than suspense. Not like it matters since they literally announced themselves with a grenade launcher, 50 cal, and a shit ton of ammo to take out pointless walkers. Whatever. More ammo they waste, the better.
Allen is still alive?!?!?! I hope he dies first.
The cell door is open. Surprised they didn’t lock it just to mess with him.
What is he seeing??
The Bible. Ohhhhhhh boy what did Hershel or Rick or someone circle being a teasing smart ass???
“And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.”
If that isn’t an “eff you” from Hershel idk what is
Is that Karen? Melissa Ponzio is that you again?? It’s been awhile.
Governor is making sure he’s not alone and then sends people in front of him just in case. Rick, would’ve just done that shit on his own and told everyone to stay put. Like, in high stakes of dying scenarios, Rick risks himself first unlike the governor so....just goes to show a lot about their characters
Milton, literally bleeding out and dying, is cheering for Andrea to drag pliers with her foot. Why did the writers and people above do this?? This hurts to watch
Andrea is really worried about Milton and is telling him he’ll be okay :(
Andrea, it’s easier if you kick your boot off, that way you can grab the pliers with your toes. Sounds weird but it’s much better than a round boot inching them nowhere.
Milton isn’t moving because he’d lose blood quicker and he doesn’t want to die close to Andrea, he wants to give her as much time as possible of escaping before he eventually dies and turns. As we know from Troy Otto’s experiments, it could anywhere from fifteen/twenty minutes to a few hours. Given TWD is about a few months past/ahead of them and Shane was in minutes, Andrea will most likely have about under ten minutes before Milton turns after he bleeds out, which would theoretically make him a weaker walker with his abdomen ripped open.
I hope Governor and Co get ambushed by walkers in the tombs like Rick and Co have been the entire season. Only fair. Like, come on, you’ve been doing surprise sudden walkers all season in these things, you can’t stop now. What kind of reverse plot ploy would that be??
Tyreese and Sasha are finally gonna uncover the truth about Woodbury. Only took them awhile and many insane days
Milton isn’t talking anymore. I don’t think he’s breathing. I think he’s dead :(
Andrea you gotta hurry.
Jump scare. Milton isn’t dead yet.
Andrea stayed because she wanted to save everyone. Even the Governor.
“I’m still here. I’m still alive.” “Yeah. You are.” Thanks for hurting me.
Andrea, hurry up.
Oh now she takes her shoes off. Typical.
Flash bangs and the alarm system. Filling the tombs with walkers. Again with the drawing fire tactic. Loving it. Let them run out of ammo.
Glaggie all suited up in the riot gear. Love that.
Maybe it’s not Noah. Idk who this kid is but Carl didn’t think for long. Kinda disappointed he killed him. Not like he would’ve lived long because he probably would’ve been written as Beth’s boyfriend and we all know any guy she dates ultimately ends up dead.
That’s a powerful line up right there. Majority of the group all together as Hershel has the kids. Just doing his Santa calls while everyone else battles an amateur army.
They’re gonna go to Woodbury to finish it.
Rick’s little kiss to Judith and his hug with Carl
“Dad I’m coming to Woodbury.”
“Carrrl.”
“I did my job like the rest of you. Took out one of the Governor’s soldiers.” boy if you don’t stop going down this cold ice path
Rick’s expression is like, ‘you?? You?? You did what?? He killed someone? My son killed someone??’
Rick, Hershel had clear eyes to know Carl was in the wrong. You let him learn to shoot, now you gotta teach about not killing everyone because he has a trigger finger.
The governor really snapped and shot them all down. Martinez stumbles back and he would’ve fallen had it not been for that truck. That makes me think he’s never seen this side of him. Meaning Merle was always the executioner. Martinez was there for the roughing up but he couldn’t slaughter people like what he just witnessed. Shumpert looks stunned too. They slinked so far away from him.
Allen is shot. Thank god. The one I didn’t care about. He was too annoying and egging everyone on. All he wanted was to kill and then suddenly has a problem with it. All bark no bite.
Karen got lucky Governor ran out of bullets.
Martinez and Shumpert looking at each other like ‘what in the actually hell just happened’
I really do think as of this episode Martinez and Shumpert could’ve switched sides and been fine. This was their moment of “oh shit” and reality of who they were following fell hard and quick. They should’ve been given the Merle opportunity. Give them a few episode to intergrate into the group, have tiny a redemption arc, a moment where they are finally stated as part of the group, and then a hell of a lot of scenes of them finding themselves and a nice lil family. Should have happened and now I’m salty it didn’t.
Probably said this before but I think Martinez uses an Uzi when not using a typical rifle.
Andrea dropping the pliers has never given me so much anxiety. I hate watching her scenes in this episode. She’s going through that trauma of losing Amy and watching her die and now she’s reliving it with Milton and also has to escape.
And his fingers twitched. That wasn’t long for him to turn.
Carl laying out a butterfly affect of people’s choices coming back to affect them. I mean, Carl has a point but his solution is wrong. I’ve been talking about the butterfly effect and this kid’s been paying attention to it the entire time not aware he’s affecting his own butterfly outcome.
But he answered my question earlier that Daryl did tell the group Merle died. Like, why would Carl know unless it’s public knowledge??
Just Daryl, Rick, and Michonne going to finish it in Woodbury. Glenn and Maggie staying back with Carol and Hershel and the kids.
They all took turns killing a walker. Gotta keep the score even.
Karen really scared Daryl. He jumped away so quickly. And then he helped her out of the truck.
Andrea, you should’ve been trying that hard to begin with. Now you got a walker Milton to deal with.
And to think all his experiments and maybe in the afterlife he got his answers. The Milton Mamet I know wouldn’t attack Andrea so walkers don’t keep the person’s identity after death. It’s known, it’s been known. Milton went from experimenting to becoming the experiment :(
They really took Karen to Woodbury with them?? Okay, interesting.
Oh is Tyreese still on watch?? The lousy shot. And Karen’s gonna compel him with the truth.
Yup. Called it. And Sasha’s there too. Bonus.
“We’re coming out.”
Daryl’s expression, ‘Rick, what? No.’
Michonne’s like, ‘dumbest thing I’ve heard him say and he’s said some shit.’
Daryl’s watching Rick and following his call just like he told Merle he would. His little shake of his head. Daryl’s probably thinking ‘stupid. stupid. stupid. We’re gonna get shot.’
And the Williams siblings let them in. Just like that.
They came looking for Andrea too because they still care.
Tyreese and Sasha getting the lay down of why Rick and Co have been fighting. Andrea isn’t the first prisoner.
Oh no the pool of blood.
7 minutes left of the finale and I hate the direction we’re going.
Andrea’s death hurts every time I watch it.
Michonne immediately going to her, realizing she’s not okay. Getting emotional about the bite. Rick too. He looks away. Daryl just looks disappointed, internally sad.
“The rest of us.”
Andrea just wanted to save people and as she’s dying she’s asking about the others and if they’re okay. She’s saying her last words, remaining positive that Michonne, her dear friend, has found a good set of people, people Andrea cared about and they cared about her too.
Andrea wants to be the one to do it.
“I know how the safety works.” STOPPPP
Rick gave her the python. Michonne isn’t leaving her.
The silent communication between her and Daryl.
“I tried.” “Yeah, you did. You did.”
So many tears are pouring down my face as I type this out y’all. I knew this was coming, and here I am crying my eyes out.
Daryl and Rick waited outside the door with Tyreese. Daryl took a knee and is turned away from them. Tyreese is just patiently waiting very respectively. And Rick’s probably kicking himself for not letting Andrea stay with them.
And then you hear the gunshot, the python clatter to the ground, and Michonne let out a soft cry.
They brought the whole Woodbury civilization home with them. Even the grandma who tried to join the army. They did this for Andrea.
And they brought her home to bury her.
Carl isn’t happy but no one gives a shit about that right now.
Hershel’s welcoming every single person.
And Rick’s looking for Lori on the catwalk. She isn’t there anymore. Rick’s done what he’s needed to do, made the right calls.
We get a cross in the small but growing graveyard and then we see the new day’s sun in the distance while overlooking walkers and listening to some somber music as we blackout and roll credits.
My Rating: 9/10
I’m sad. Still crying. We started off bittersweet thinking they were leaving but it ended being an ambush and they chased the bad guys away in a battle that didn’t do shit. Had a very drawn out death for Milton as he bled to death before Andrea and then turned and bit her. But at the end of the episode, Rick fulfilled Andrea’s wish and brought Woodbury to safety leaving the Governor, Martinez, and Shumpert being the only ones we don’t know the current whereabouts of; the latter two severally considering their side and who they’re following. Very emotional ending for all parties. I suppose the character arcs were completed for Milton and Andrea*. Milton ultimately died finally standing up to the Governor with no longer being able to ignore his shit and Andrea died trying to save everyone like she said and wanted to; and through Rick fulfilling her wish, she did. And then she was taken home to her people where she’ll be buried beside T-Dog and Lori and maybe even Merle.
*Andrea was originally supposed to live as she does in the comics and end up with Rick instead of Richonne happening, but the writers couldn’t figure out the direction of the episode so they decided to kill Andrea off. It was a sudden decision as Laurie Holden had an 8 year contract and had no knowledge of what happened until she got the script. This was the same exact thing that happened to Michael Rooker (Merle) in 3x15. Back to back episodes where the writers and show execs suddenly pulled the cord on main characters because they couldn’t work around their own writing 😕
Recently, yesterday (08/20/2020 AD), I found this fantastically animated PC game, John & Ted Mathot’s Creature Crunch (1996), which features amazing artists like...
Dave Wasson (Star vs. the Forces of Evil, The Thing Which Lurked in the Tub, Beany & Cecil)
Carey Yost (The Powerpuff Girls, Uncle Grandpa)
Charlie Bean (The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, The Amazing World of Gumball)
Caesar Martinez (Sym-Bionic Titan)
Chris Savino (Samurai Jack, Grim & Evil/The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Johnny Test, Dexter’s Laboratory)
@henshincyborg (The Ren & Stimpy Show, The Powerpuff Girls)
Sherm Cohen (Suburban Daredevil, SpongeBob)
Marc Perry (Johnny Test, The Ren & Stimpy Show)
the late Tuck Tucker AKA Billy Bob Tucker (2 Stupid Dogs, SpongeBob, Drawn Together)
Shane Glines (Spümcø Comic Book, Batman: The Animated Series)
...you get the picture!
Timing Directors feature Don Judge, Tom Yasumi and Michel Lyman. The digital animation has some limits, but it’s much better than the animation that Cartoon Network Studios projects use these days (you know... tightly-animated “beanmouth” cartoons animated overseas in specifically Korea).
I found this from a now-deleted tweet by Justin M. Morgan from August 19, 2020 (shared in a quote tweet by one of my former mutual followers on Twitter/X). I can’t believe that I never knew about this game! I played Lamb Chops Loves Music, Jump Start Preschool/Kindergarten and The Worlds of Billy as a little kid, but this one never came into my sight until August 20th, 2020. The IMDb page for the game was in need of crediting the artists, so I updated that page--I was born to do it, and I did exactly that: I brought these great artists from my Cartoon Network childhood to the attention of people who love great animation/design and games, including obscure ones such as this.
Here’re the closing credits featuring a super talented, Western American/Canadian animation team for the T-rated 1996 point-and-click PC game.
Tweet version here (Carey Yost liked it!).
Watch the game here (unless you don’t want to spoil it)
