After several days of work, I have completed my map of the Romance languages in Europe. You can even examine it yourself in detail
Since it's made with Google Maps, it's got all the functionality of that built into it. You can view it on Google Earth if you're so inclined. SO there's that
For a little bit of nerdy information, read on. Just some of my thoughts about my work
I think half of this map is leagues better than the other.
I was very confident when it came to mapping Ibero-Romance, and I still feel that I did a great job. I feel confident in the distinctions I made. However, I cannot say the same about something like Gallo-Italic, for example.
There is a lot of politics wrapped up in linguistics. From what I understand, many people living in Spain say that the people of Leon and Asturias speak different language. This would be a North vs South divide, "Asturian" vs "Leonese". In reality though, language differences lie along an East-West axis. We might call the language "Asturleonese" and call its varieties "Western", "Central", and "Eastern"
When it comes to Italy, I cannot seem to disentangle politics from the linguistics. The grouping Piedmontese-Lombard is accepted by Glottolog but I don't know on what grounds this is accepted. On the other hand, when trying to find a counter argument I see only the note on wikipedia that this grouping is rejected for political reasons (Lombardy and Piedmont having very separate histories). So I tried to be conservative and accepted Piedmontese-Lombard
Also Aromanian is not so widely spoken but I was not about to construct these regions by hand
All in all, I think I did pretty good. And now that this is out there, you guys can edit my work if you have expert opinions that can improve the map. This is a very convenient thing to have, let me tell you. For me at least, I like being able to point out on a map where a certain minority language's form of a word exists. Very soon, expect a showcase of the outcome of the word "civitatem" in Romance using this map
To all my new followers (the 5 of you that there are), expect no art for a few days because I'm currently focused on creating a map of the Romance languages in Google Maps. I just learned Google lets you make custom maps, so I'm doing that
Still on my plate are the whole of Italy (Gallo-Italic + Italo-Romance) and Romania (Eastern Romance)
