"Y/N," you heard Sehyoon call out as he entered your apartment. Rushing to the door, pregnancy test in hand, you needed to compose yourself before he noticed you were acting strangely. Quickly you stuffed the test into the medicine cabinet and glanced at yourself in the mirror. After taking a deep breath, you flushed the toilet and returned to reality.
"You okay?" he asked with concern. You nodded, the words failing to leave your throat. "Are you sure? You look like you've seen a ghost." You tried your best to fake a small smile as he looked at you, not entirely convinced. "I'm sorry to do this to you, but can we move our plans to next week? I have an urgent work-related meeting that needs me present with Jiham," he said, his eyes pleading. "It's okay, I can make other arrangements to return home," you replied, holding his hands gently. His gaze held you intently, showing a flicker of hurt. "But I want to see our mums, too," he complained. "Then I will see you when you visit her soon," you replied before his momentarily silence. "You really are going to go home, aren't you?" he asked, sadness behind his eyes. "Yes. Their’s nothing left for me here now that Yuta’s gone." And now that we’ve ruined our friendship and I'm pregnant with your child, you thought to yourself. "I'm here," he said. You tilted your head in confusion. "But you have Minji now," you responded, hoping he would tell you it was you he wanted, or perhaps confess about the night you shared. "Can I not have you both? My girlfriend and my best friend?" he asked. You took a deep breath. Once he knew you were having his child, he would be angry and hate you for tearing him away from his real love. "I will still be your best friend in Jeolla-do. We remained close when we were apart for all those years,” you said, smiling as he frowned. "But I've gotten so used to having you back," he said, looking at you with a pained expression. "Back? You left me first," you said playfully. "And now you're leaving me," he replied, elbowing you back with a fake soft smile. "You promise to speak to me every single week, without fail?" he asked, his eyes losing their sharp intensity as you nodded. "Promise me," he repeated, holding out his pinky finger. "I promise to talk to you on the phone regularly for as long as you need me," you said, lingering on the words need. He needed his best friend, not the woman who had gotten herself pregnant. You pressed your pinky to his and flicked it up to seal the deal with your thumbs. Just then, his phone rang, and for the first time in weeks of talking alone, he had to leave. Walking back to the medicine cabinet, you picked up the test and looked at it with mixed emotions. The thought of a small bundle of your very own version of Sehyoon left you feeling warm and fuzzy. Minji would have him, but you would have a miniature version of him in your life, filling the empty holes in your heart. "I'm pregnant," you told Sehyoon later. He looked at you in horror as silence filled the room. "Who's the dad?" he asked, annoying you as you rolled your eyes. "You are." He let out a laugh, cold as ice. "We’ve never had sex. You're not the Virgin Mary," he scoffed, disgust written across his face. "We did! You know we did, you just pretended we didn't," you cried out, your chest heaving in pain. "Why would I sleep with you? I love Minji. You're just a friend, and after this stunt, you're not even that. How dare you try to pass your Japanese lover’s child off on me!" he screamed frantically. Your hand fell to your stomach as you imagined those words falling from his lips. He would hate you forever for making him remember he had slept with you.
You couldn't do that; you had to hide this baby from him. You decided to go to your mother’s first—Sehyoon would ask questions you weren't ready to answer if you didn't leave—and then, after a few weeks, move somewhere no one could find you. You would keep up the phone calls so no one would get suspicious.

Packing your things, you sent your items to a storage unit. Taking one last look at the test, you placed it in the box of memories you’d kept of Sehyoon over the years. If you were leaving him behind, you had to do everything in your power to let him go, even though it hurt. "Wow, it looks so empty," Minji said eyes roaming over the room when she came over that evening. "I still have a bed," you said, bringing her into your bedroom with the takeout she had brought. "I'm really going to miss you," she said, pouting as she grabbed her container of Chinese food. "Me too. I'm going to miss you and Sehyoon; you're both too cute together," you said, faking a cheerfulness you were proud to pull off. "How could Yuta and I ever think you two were in love with each other?" she chuckled, digging into her food. "You and Yuta thought what?" you questioned. She looked at you, wincing. "Sorry, I shouldn't have said that," she said. You breathed in deeply. "Yet you did." She bit her lip. "I was trying to make a lighthearted joke, I'm sorry. It was too soon. Yuta and I ended things because we both thought you were in love with each other. When you didn't follow Yuta to Japan, I truly thought we were right. But I found Sehyoon in a sobbing mess when I came back to collect my stuff. It was obvious he loved me. And you leaving now proves it was the country you didn't want to leave, not Sehyoon," she said, looking guilty. "So you both tested us?" you said, wanting to be angry, but they had been right. You were in love with Sehyoon. He was the one who wasn't; his pain after sleeping with you made that evident. No wonder he had been awkward around you—he hated those memories. And now, you were carrying a permanent reminder. "I don't know... can you forgive us?" she asked. You nodded, feeling deflated. "I'm hurt that you tested us, but it proved he loved you, so I'm happy for you," you said, your heart feeling heavy. "I wish you would call Yuta. He's unblocked you," she said, popping some food into her mouth. "What will that gain? He wants a life in Japan, and I want a life in Korea. We want two different things, and I shouldn't hold him back," you said, sighing. How could you get back with him when you were pregnant by the very man he knew, deep down, you loved? You weren't cruel enough to add a month on your pregnancy and pin the baby on Yuta. "Are you okay?" she asked breaking your thoughts and you nodded. "Yeah, just tired and anxious for the new start," you said, smiling. "You will come wake me tomorrow before you leave, right? I know Sehyoon can't be there to say goodbye, but I can do it for both of us," she said. You nodded. You felt guilty, but you didn't wait for the morning to say goodbye. You didn't even wait for the night. After Minji left, you looked around the empty home and decided there and then to leave. You called a cab for the coach station and took the last coach out, texting your apologies to both Minji and Sehyoon. Your only response was: You decided to leave me. I wish you all the best. It was like he was losing a lover, and while that felt good for a second, you remembered that to him, you were still just his best friend.
------------------------🔺--------------------
You stayed with your parents for three weeks. Your room was a place trapped in time, a mixture of remnants from your failed relationship with Yuta and your close friendship with Sehyoon. It made you miss the latter, forcing you to place the evidence of your past into boxes. Just your HYDE posters surrounding your bed. Most evenings spent figuring your next step. Bringing up Sehyoon’s child near nature alone was your new dream. Despite being a mum brought fear to your bones. But when you heard plans that Sehyoon and Minji were coming home, you fast-tracked your departure. You rented an apartment in Busan and found a small job at a local bar. The owner, Lee Sangyeon, even knew you were pregnant. The day before Sehyoon arrived, you left with a small bag of clothes and made your way to your new home. Sehyoon had called you, disappointed that you weren't there for his visit, but you promised to send an address once you were settled. Your empty apartment was barren but cheap, and you arranged for your items to be sent from storage the next day.
-----------------------🔺---------------------
You went to the bar Deobi Drink house to meet your boss, Lee Sangyeon. He was younger than you, but he possessed a mature soul. He introduced you to his current three bar staff: Younghoon, Youngjae, and Jacob. You shook their hands and blushed when Sangyeon told them to look after you because you were expecting. Younghoon however, with eyebrows furrowed looked concerned. "Hyung, are you sure it's safe for her to work here?" he asked as Jacob offered you a seat. "I need the money," you replied, biting your lip. "Then make the father work while you rest up," he questioned, arms folded. "There is no father involved," you responded, looking at the floor as silence filled the room. "Then it's my job to make sure you're not working alone, to keep you and the baby safe," Youngjae said with a soft smile. "We will look after you, I promise," Jacob added. Younghoon softened his gaze hearing your situation. "Tell us the second it's too much," he added. You felt safe with these four; it made you miss Sehyoon even more, as he had been your safety blanket, but for now, they would do. They kept their word, even introducing the other staff members to support you. Choi Chanhee and Lee Hyunjae were just as attentive. Lee Juyeon and Ji Changmin, the security, kept one eye on the door and the other on you throughout your shifts. Even the locals became protective. Kim Sunwoo was your flirty defender; if any male paid you too much attention, he would lie and say you were his. Kevin would make you laugh whenever you felt sick. Hyunjun and Haknyeon would come in to tell you tales of their travels, making you listen to the culture of every country they had visited. Sangyeon and Younghoon helped you move your items into your flat, and Youngjae took you to your first doctor's appointment. He held your hand as you watched your tiny bundle on the screen, and you were sure he cried more than you did. "Stop crying, they’ll think you're the dad," you said, taking the scan photo from his hand. "You don't have to be the dad to find a new life emotional. That’s a whole little person you're carrying," he sniffled. You shook your head, amused. The amusement soon vanished when you realised the name on your incoming call flashed "💜🧸💜" on the screen making you freeze on the spot. "That's him, right?" Youngjae asked. You nodded, words failing you. "Did he know you were having a scan today?" You shook your head. "He doesn't even know I'm pregnant," you admitted for the first time. "Oh, Y/N, don't push him away," he said, looking into your eyes. "He's with someone else—someone he loves. He even pretended we didn't... you know," you said, your eyes watering. "I won't pry further, but I like to think a father out there wouldn't abandon their child, partner or not," he said, holding you tighter. "But until you both find the courage, I will be here for you both." He said as he linked your arm with his and led you out of the maternity ward.
-----------------------🔺---------------------
"Y/N, they left one of your items in your lockup," Sehyoon said when you eventually called him back. "Oh, thanks for letting me know. I'll ring them and arrange for them to send it. How come they called you?" you asked causing him to huff. "Because I'm supposed to be your best friend, and we arranged that lockup together, remember?" he said, sounding frustrated. "Sorry, they didn't even attempt to ring me, that's all. I'm not offended," you said, feeling guilty. "Are things between us okay?" he asked. "Yes, why wouldn't they be?" you replied, feeling the weight of the distance you had created. "You've been off with me. You didn't say goodbye when you left, you moved wherever you are without telling me even the day before I was visiting, and now you rarely pick up the calls. Since that day, you've been off with me," he said, sounding tearful. "Since what day?" you pushed, hoping he would answer. "Since Yuta left you," he replied after a long silence, as if choosing his words carefully. "It's like you blame me for him leaving you," he added. You laughed, balling your fist. "I don't blame you for Yuta leaving me, god damn it, Sehyoon," you snapped, ready to spill your frustration but holding back with a short, deep breath. "But you blame me for something, don't you?" he asked into the silence. I blame you for being repulsed by sleeping with me, you wanted to scream, but you held back. "Sehyoon, please don't do this. Let's not argue; I'm exhausted as it is," you said, not wanting to push this before you spilled his worst nightmare. "Please don't leave me," he whimpered. Your heart broke, remembering those exact words you had whispered before you gave him your soul that night. "I haven't left you. I'm still here, just like I was when you left home. There are just things I need to do now," you responded. "But we kept in contact! I always kept you close, We've spoken just twice since you left Seoul two months ago. What is going on in your life that I can't be part of, Y/N?" he pleaded. You wanted to spill the truth right then, but you heard Minji arrive home—a reminder of why you had to keep this secret. "I'm finding myself again, that's all. I haven't run away; I'm in Busan," you replied. "Busan? Why so far away?" he questioned and you lightly smiled. "Nothing brings peace like the smell of the sea," you said, earning a chuckle. "That's sounds somewhat peaceful and beautiful. What's it like there? I must come visit. Minji would love to see Busan," he said, sounding like the old version of him you loved so much. However, because of his words, panic set in; if he visited, he would know you were pregnant. "There's something else I should tell you," you said, feeling guilty. "I'm seeing someone," you lied. If he made a random visit, you needed to explain why you had a bump. "What?" he spat out. "He's the reason I came to Busan," you lied further. The phone went silent. "Oh. Okay. Wow. That wasn't the response I thought you were going to give." "Look, I've been quiet because Yuta left me because he thought you and I were in love," you said, hating yourself for using Yuta once again. "I don't want to lose this one because someone else doesn't understand that we are just friends," you added, feeling sick with the words falling from your mouth. "So we can't be friends because of your ex-boyfriend?" he asked, sounding hurt. "No, I'm not saying that. Just... maybe until the relationship is established, we don't see each other for a while," you said, hating every syllable. "Yet you and Yuta were together years before you both came to Seoul," he said into the silence when your throat dried up unable to answer. "Thanks for admitting that you hate me for breaking you and Yuta up," he said, almost tearful. You heard Minji call his name in the background. "No, I don't, I swear," you said, feeling guilty that he had come to that conclusion, even though it was your words that sent him there.
"Look, I will block you and not bother you again," he said, his voice breaking. Before you could call his name, the call ended. Even when you tried to ring him back, he kept his word—like Yuta, he had blocked you.
----------------------🔺----------------------
You okay?" Youngjae asked the next morning at work. You simply nodded as you leaned against the bar. "Yeah, just feeling nauseous, that's all. And very exhausted," you chuckled. "Do you want me to get one of the others to work your shift today?" he asked. You shook your head. "No, I need the money," you smiled. He rolled his eyes. "Babe, do you think I would let you go homeless or hungry?" he said with a smile that automatically made you smile back. "You're growing a baby; it's not like you're skiving off." "I will need the time off when I get ready to pop, but for now, I'm nowhere near that," you said. He rolled his eyes. "Well, rest when there's no one to serve, okay!" he ordered and you nodded. -----------------------🔺---------------------
Your parcel from the storage unit eventually arrived, and you realised what you had left behind: Sehyoon's box. Of course, it had to be the one thing you were trying to forget. Picking the box up, you didn't have the heart to go through it, so you placed it in the storage space under your bed. Grabbing your scan photo, you looked at your child. With your hands on your belly, you smiled, wondering what features they would take after. Part of you wanted a boy that looked like his dad. Tears began to fall—your heart was truly breaking. You had gone a week without hearing his voice, and while you had endured longer without that in the past. Knowing you would never hear it again felt like a physical wound. Bringing up your phone, you found some videos of the times you had laughed together. There was a video of him showing you some HYDE merch he found in a shop before you came to Seoul. You had teased him, hoping he loved you enough to buy it, but he had just teased you back. Feeling sad, you put on a soft vocal HYDE song, crying to the slow, pained vocals, feeling as though they were your own. You didn't fit into Sehyoon's life anymore, and he was laughing at the thought that you two had ever been anything more than friends.
-------------------------🔺-------------------
"You should have a gender reveal, you know," Kevin said when he came in. "It's a good excuse to get things for the baby," he added. You rolled your eyes. "And everyone will know I'm fatherless," you glared at him playfully. "As if your child is fatherless! They have twelve fathers," he smirked. "Ask Youngjae, and he'll say he's all twelve of them," Hyunjae snorted. "Then how can I ask for the baby daddy to buy things for their own baby?" you said, ignoring Hyunjae's comment. "You don't think the customers will bring a few gifts?" Kevin questioned, amused. "Depends on which ones. I don't think a keg of beer is quite the thing this baby needs," you scoffed. "No, but as one of the twelve dads, I would appreciate it," Kevin chuckled. You went to swat his arm, but he moved away.
-----------------------🔺---------------------
Another month passed, and you had your next scan. Youngjae, as always, held your hand. "Have you chosen a nickname for the little one?" the sonographer asked. You shook your head. "What about 'Dad'? Surely you've got a name in mind?" she said. Youngjae chuckled, blushing with being called the baby's Father. "Well, he looks like bit of a wobbly odeng," he said. You chuckled at him. "My baby isn't a piece of food you can scoff down," you said, slapping his arm. "I won't eat him, though, I promise," he said as you rolled your eyes with amusement. “He also looks like a little tadpole and tadpoles are fish so Odeng is fitting," he said, looking proud. "Tadpoles are amphibians," you said. As he deadpanned in denial which looked cute. "No, they are not," he snorted. "Well, 'Dad' is correct," the sonographer said, laughing. "Told you I know my animals," Youngjae teased. "No, Miss Oh was right about that. You've been calling him a boy since you both came in," she said, smiling. Your eyes widened in excitement. "Wait, I'm having a boy?" you said excitedly and She nodded. You were going to have a little version of Sehyoon—one you could hold and cherish forever. "Little Odeng is officially going to be the thirteenth male member of this family," Youngjae said, stroking your belly. "He means the workplace; I haven't got twelve other children," you said and the sonographer laughed. "You mean eleven! I make twelve, and I'm not your kid," he snorted as you lightly chuckled raising one of your eyebrows. "You sure about that, Jae?" you said. He blushed at the new pet name, and you made a note to call him that more often. You eventually made it back to the pub. A dozen blue balloons were in his hand—in fact, there were thirteen to fit the "twelve fathers" joke. "Baby Odeng is officially a boy!" Youngjae screamed in excitement the second the door opened to the bar. You saw blue banners and balloons, a three-tier cake, and a whole corner of gifts for the baby. "You threw me a gender reveal without telling me?" you said, slapping Youngjae's arm playfully. "So, we're having a boy," Hyunjae said, twirling you in the air and pressing a kiss to your cheek. "Congratulations, sweetie," Sangyeon said, pulling you into a hug. "You've got to hug all twelve of us, you know," Sunwoo said, opening his arms with a wink. You fell into his embrace giggling at his ability to use this moment to get his feelers in. "What about Daddy number thirteen?" a voice came from behind you. Turning, your eyes wide in shock as you saw the last person you ever expected standing there. With his new shortened black hair, bangs falling into his face and his perfect, healing smile, it was your former partner, Yuta. And his expression did not look amused.
