Julio Claudian week day 4 | Family and Children, Milonia Caesonia and Julia Drusilla

Day 4 !! Decided to draw the little Drusilla with her mother. We don’t know much about them, but apparently Caligula loved them both sincerely.

Milonia Caesonia was always a figure that intrigued me. She wasn’t pretty, she was old, but Caligula loved her, but sadly we have no statue portraying her,,,, ( spoiler I used the I, Claudius design ) except for a ring.

Julia Drusilla, the only daughter of Caligula, died at almost 2, cause the guards thought she was going to be evil like her father. Her story always makes me sad, so I wanted to portray her peacefully sleeping in her mother’s arms.

A sapphire Hololith (a ring carved from a single stone), one of the missing Arundel and Marlborough gems, once catalogued as belonging to the Emperor Caligula.

The 2,000-year-old sky-blue hololith has a face believed to be that of fourth wife Caesonia engraved into the bezel.

A Roman Emperor (Claudius) by Lawrence Alma-Tadema

In AD 41, the debauched Roman emperor Caligula was murdered. Gratus, a member of the Praetorian, draws a curtain aside to reveal the terrified Claudius who is hailed as emperor on the spot. Beneath the herm in the background, lie the bodies of Caligula, his wife Caesonia, their young daughter and of a bystander. The blood stains on the herm denote the struggle that has transpired as well as the setting, the Hermaeum, an apartment in the Palace where Claudius had sought refuge.
