I think about the Roman Empire every day.
Genuine question do you think there’s issues with making villains that represent fascism look cool aesthetically? Like giving them stylish outfits for example.
Not really. Not at all.
There are not many things that the writers can do if their audience is stupid. It cannot be helped.
Had to jump in here to add context because I'm German and this has been somewhat of a special interest because I sew historical costumes.
Nazi Germany famously hired top-of-the-line designers like Hugo Boss to create show uniforms that were actually very uncomfortable to wear (I've read that apparently some soldiers couldn't sit down properly wearing them) made from stiff fabrics that do not accomodate the body. They were literally made to look good on camera and create an image of a sexy "badass" and were not worn in everyday life. Also, the on-the-ground soldiers wore entirely different garbs and were oftentimes severely under-equipped.
I think if you want to portray a fascist in a "cool" outfit you always have to keep in mind that it is deliberate, carefully planned propaganda. It isn't by accident that the SS uniform looks like that.
Now, as a writer, I'd say you can do whatever you want, but it's always good to know the historical context of fashion design and the choices that led to clothing looking the way it does!
Most of our modern day cultural idea of a fascist is an SS uniform. Why is that? Because it looks, unfortunately, good as hell. And why is that? How? What were the thoughts behind the design? That's where you can do a lot of interesting world building.
So, what I am hearing is, I should get a time machine, then make every nazi at the 'big fancy gathering' sit down so all their pants will rip at the seams? I like this plan. Then, I'll take a group picture and send it to the allies to make countless posters with Hitler's split pants.
