Thoughts on UFC Fight Night: Imavov vs Borralho

Oh my God, what a horrible night for the fighting nerds ;-; My heart broke seeing Carlos Prates cry into the Brazilian flag after both his friends lost the biggest fights of their careers.

Nassourdine Imavov vs Caio Borralho

I'll be the first to admit that I never really paid attention to Imavov before this. Like I watched his fight with Israel Adesanya, but because he's so quiet and doesn't really do a lot of press, I just always thought he was boring. Safe to say I no longer think that!

Man I just did NOT appreciate how fucking FAST he is. Maybe because Adesanya is an excellent counter-striker that punished him in their exchanges, I didn't clock that Imavov is fast as hell. Man, he just chewed Borralho uppppp! I watched a Youtube video that analysed his fights, frame-by-frame, since last night that showed that Imavov has a 40% speed advantage over his opponents on average. That's CRAZY.

But both Chimaev and DDP makes these two look like amateurs. I think they'd both get fucked up if they were made to fight with either of them.

Mauricio Ruffy vs Benoit Saint-Denis

Some commentators hate on Benoit Saint-Denis and I never really understood it. I get losing to Renato Moicano is kind of embarrassing, but I think Saint-Denis just a good all-rounder. Decent striking. Good takedowns. Good grappling. That kind of MMA foundation really shows against a strike-heavy fighter like Mauricio Ruffy. Ruffy really relies on his opponents allowing him to ascend into a flow-state where he gets to do all his highlight-reel knockouts.

People say he reminded them of prime Conor, and like prime Conor, once you put him up against someone who presents a takedown threat, he just gets downgraded into looking like a mortal man in the cage again.

Paul Craig vs Modestas Bukauskas

Goodbye to a real UFC legend (that was on a 5-fight losing streak). I think retiring was a good decision for Paul Craig; I really don't think he was going crack the top 15 again, especially at the age of 37. I find it crazy that his striking just never ever got better as time went on.

That was a CRAZY knockout though – I full on turned to my partner and went: "Did he just die?" when I saw Paul's head just slump to the canvas. (At least he can tell his kids that he beat Ankalaev one time.)

It was also surprising to see that Bukauskas doesn't look particularly big? Maybe training with Tom Aspinall really taught him how to fight dudes who are bigger, but I wonder if his size is going to disadvantage him in the future.

P.S.: Loved seeing Tom Aspinall get boo'd by all the French fans and take it like an absolute champ. He's such an unproblematic fave <3 I know he's absolutely going to MURDER Cyril Gane (but in that sweet, gentlemanly Aspinall way)

Caio Borralho vs. Paul Craig - UFC 301

Caio Borralho (16-1) is like Paulo Costa but inverted. Jacked, punches hard, and big as crap. But he's a nerd, is not an overly aggressive volume puncher (he's more like Machida), and has a full head of hair. The Fighting Nerd has gotten his UFC career off to a strong start with 6 straight wins. It's enough to get him a ranked fight and possibly set him up for a title eliminator.

Borralho will face off with Jared Cannonier (17-7) in the main event of UFC on ESPN 62 this Saturday (August 24).
